Here's an online store to rock your existence: Smithsonian Global Sound. It's essentially their vast and wonderful Folkways archive, at 99¢ a pop. Signup is quick, easy, and nonobtrusive. Also, under the "Features and Education" menu, they've got free streaming radio, which you don't even have to sign up for.

I *knew* this was coming from way back but am thrilled to see that it is online! I told Ed I'd use that as my bike reward - if I get on the bike I get to download a song! Hey, it's cheaper than a Starbucks everyday (not that I get a starbucks everyday of course but...) ;-) Thanks for the post.
