Earth Day

It's sad, when you think about it, that many people need a "holiday" to remind them that this planet is the only home we've got, and if we continue to mess it up we will kill ourselves off. On the other hand, it's heartening that so many people do pay attention to it.

There are lots of good sites out there, but the best three seem to be Earthday Network, EnviroLink, and The US government's internal Earthday portal. A couple of good kid-specific sites are Kids Domain and the Earth Day Groceries Project.

No sadder than that we need a day to remind us to tell our mothers or fathers we love them, honor our veterans, or get romantic with our SOs. Part of the point of holidays is to provide occasions to concentrate on one aspect of the general soup of "stuff we know all the time in the back of our heads, but which we tend to shuffle to the back because more time-sensitive things keep happening to distract us along the way."
