I don't know why this shocks anyone. This is tiny compared to, say, tax dollars for school vouchers so we can pay to put the next generation through evolution-denying Christian madrassas. And minuscule compared to what's to come. The Church is waging war on all non-Church institutions: taking control of the mass media, corrupting and co-opting education, destroying the current and future practice of medicine, and attacking the independence of the judiciary, the functioning of the rule of law, and the basics of the Bill of Rights. They will not let up until they win.
I do not think the electorate will wake up in time to save the United States of America as we know it. Maybe if journalism had not been quietly castrated, but now there's no open channel left to communicate anything meaningful to the public. Some form of Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector of the Realm will sit in the White House within our lifetimes.
Don't be lame and say it's already happened, either. Read your history; you ain't seen nothing yet. The zealots get organized, they systematically take control, they make everyone miserable for decades until the middle is finally aggravated enough to throw the fuckers out. Time and again.
Iran, for example, has been in the middle of this cycle since the late 70s. You want a good example of a paper democracy where the religious party controls everything and the rights of the minority are unprotected? America may look a lot like Iran in a few years if the brainwashing and erosion of our institutions continues.
What happens in the Senate in the next few months will be some indication as to whether the Constitution will ultimately survive this round of religious tyranny. I've believed since November that it will not, but I still lay some hope on the remaining moderate Republicans who believe in the Constitution and their role within it. A fracture between the common-sense Republicans and the wacko Bible Republicans is really about the only thing left that could make the GOP Crazy Train break down and stop. I see some signs of it, like the DeLay ethics rules reversal.
But I'm doing as my great-grandfather did and pulling my shit together now, in the event I need to escape to the Free World. America gave my family a real good century, but the Land of Freedom ride may be coming to a stop. We'll see.
