Nicked from [livejournal.com profile] smallship1:
  1. How many films do I own on DVD/video?
    • DVD, at least 250. Counting things I've got on retail VHS, upwards of 450. Counting things taped off of TV back when I watched, including MST3K, I shudder to contemplate.
  2. What was the last film I bought?
    • Lloyd Webber's/Schumacher's Phantom of the Opera.
  3. What was the last film I watched?
    • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
  4. What are five films that I watch a lot, or that mean a lot to me?
    • The Lord of the Rings -- without question, my favorite film ever, the adventure that grabbed my heart from the first frames and has held it ever since.
    • Fantasia -- superb animation, the best of classical music, the unfettering of the imagination... what's not to love?
    • Ghidrah the Three-Headed Monster -- decades before MST3K, I was practicing for it with this film. See, there's a scene not too long before the end, when Godzilla, Rodan, and baby Mothra sit down together and have a talk about whether or not they should fight Ghidrah. The Mothra Twins translate, but I used to come up with my own version, making my little sister laugh like a nut.
    • Inherit The Wind -- a social issue still near and dear to my heart, showcasing the finest acting you will ever see.
    • Singin' In The Rain -- another movie about possibilities, doing things in film that hadn't been done before, and even showing that beauty is only skin-deep (all praise to the exquisite Jean Hagen), and also filled with catchy tunes, great comedy, and some of the best characters ever.
Have at it.

Inherit the Wind is good. I am tickled, as I remarked in another context, by the coincidence of Tracy and March opposite each other--imagining the scene: "You want evolution? I'll show you evolution!" *gulp gulp ooh aaargh eek* and so on.

There's probably a song in there somewhere...

And today is the anniversary of the arrest of John Scopes. And the travesty of Kansas Board of Education doing away with the teaching of evolution in that state.

And I have no desire to belittle that in any way. I was talking about a film I enjoyed. Why, what are you guys talking about?

The arrest & trial of John Scopes for the crime of teaching evolution, in defiance of a Tennessee state law, was the real-life basis for Inherit the Wind. The character of Drummond was modeled after Scopes' defense attorney, Clarence Darrow, while Brady was modelled after the real life prosecutor, orator and one-time Presidential candidate William Jennings Bryant.

Three of your five are way up on my list -- Fantasia, Inherit the Wind and Singin' in the Rain. That Jean Hagen lost the Oscar that year is a crime. I've never seen the LotR movies, and just have no interest in 'em. Mark me down as a fannish heretic, I guess... :)

Off to my LJ to work on my list!

I think I love you. I can count on the fingers of one hand the sci-fi people who know and treasure "Singin'" as much as I do, and that includes the Rev.Doc above.

Oh, different every time. Detroit's Channel 7 showed it a fair amount on thier 4:30 movie (back when local stations did stuff like that). Sometimes a poker game, sometimes a tea party, sometimes complaining about their aches and pains....
