To Be Continued
May. 9th, 2005 05:31 amExcept for the joys of Chicago traffic, I had a very good time at To Be Continued, and I want to thank John Gilchrist, Rich Lukes, and especially con chair Bob Palmer for their hospitality and kindness.
It was also cool meeting Dean Haglund and Stephen Austin, and once again worshipping the exquisite Virginia Hey, and seeing Larry Smith and Sally Kobee and Ray Van Tilburg, however briefly, and of course hanging out with Kim Williams and her adorable granddaughter Jeneil,
tigertoy, Jan of the Magic Fingers, Art Warneke (lotsa funny stuff), and of course Filk GOH Steve MacDonald.
My set on Saturday went pretty well, and at the "Can Filk Coexist With Dementia?" panel on Sunday (consensus: oh, sure, why not), I debuted preliminary recordings of two of the songs from The 24 Hour Project 2. Good reaction. The Saturday night filk was great, with one of those classic moments that those lucky enough to be there for will talk about for awhile:
lukeski did a damn near 15-minute piece called "Grease Wars", which is exactly what you fear it might be -- a retelling of Star Wars Episode 4 to the soundtrack of the movie Grease. Just as he was starting, three guys sauntered in -- dressed as an Tie Fighter pilot, an Imperial Stormtrooper, and Jango Fett. And they got into it -- as in, when Luke was lyrically describing Imperial atrocities, they gave each other thumbs-up; when Luke sang "Oh-whoah, those Je-eh-di Knights", they started dancing like the Pips ("Well-ah, well-ah, well-ah, HUH"). The medley is a hoot, and the guys in costume sent it way over the top, and it was a beautiful thing.
Next up: The big 'un. MarCon.
