There are some excellent-looking small and serious films coming out this year. I'm betting Cinderella Man is pretty good; I have hopes for Dark Water and Skeleton Key.

But those aren't what we're jacked to see.

In case you missed 'em, there are new teaser trailers for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe. Very, very promising.

And, some late-breaking news that I think might rock your world, so new it isn't even on the official site yet: In case you hadn't heard, those wacky Wachowski Bros. are making a movie of the graphic novel masterpiece V For Vendetta, by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. Natalie Portman has already been cast as Evey; but the big new news is that the man behind the mask, who was originally supposed to be played by James Purefoy, is now to be voiced and bodied by... Hugo Frickin' Weaving. Happy happy joy, joy, happy happy joy joy....

Oh, and: Don't forget this.

I'm happy to see Hugo getting a chance to exercise his leading man chops, and eager to see his performance - but it's a pity Purefoy had to go, nonetheless, I felt the relatively-unknown factor contributed to the character. Ah, well, I'm sure Hugo will do his best if he can hold on. (Oh, I hope he does! *crosses fingers*)

I suppose they'll have to show his face...when you've got a face like his at yiour disposal you don't hide it. Pity, though...the unknownness of V (even as to gender in the comics) was part of the mystery of the thing.

Well, remember, they did "show his face" several times, as Evey imagined a few different versions of unmasking him. There are several possibilities as to how they can handle it. I'm hopeful because, even though the Wachowskis are not the writing gods they think they are, they are very much comic geeks, and I believe they are aware that screwing this up would piss off their fan base forever.

Well, I wish them the best of British luck. (That's British, guys--are you listening? British. Like brutish only with an I. Set it in Seattle and we may have to have words.)

No worries on that account. CHUD (http://www.chud.com/) had a few set pictures up a while back, and it's London alright.

Well, Prague masquerading as London, but you get the idea.

Oh wow. There's been talk of a Watchmen movie for years.

The Narnia trailer kicked butt, the Harry Potter trailer left me wanting more, which it was supposed to do. An there's still almost two months to the next book!

Thanks for the links!

I can't imagine the Watchmen being done properly on screen.

I'd love to be pleasantly surprised, though...

Dude, why are you pysched about "Narnia"?

Don't you realize all that's going to be is "Passion of the Christ" for kids?

Just another means to indoctrinate the next generation into the world of closet sadism that is Evangelical Christianity?

I'm very well aware of precisely what Narnia is. I'm also well aware that it's a pretty good adventure fantasy... and that C. S. Lewis was made a really fervent Christian through the friendship of... J. R. R. Tolkien.

You know my views of Christianity. We're not getting into that on this thread. Got it? Good.

Actually, the story is a bit deeper than that. But, it's your LJ, and if you don't want to get into that, then we won't.

Suffice to say, I doubt I'll be going to see this film.

I'm excited about Narnia - that was one of my favorite series of all times. :) The subtext is there, sure, but it's good reading (and hopefully good viewing, too!).

Y'know, I would like to see the Great American Gas Bag get this role. Only because he gets offed in the first issue. (And there was Much Rejoicing.)

But a Watchmen movie.......too cool.
