I am amused that Rotten Tomatoes has an "Episode 3 Tomatometer Watch" (currently 90% with 31 reviews) on its main page. We all know the emotional investment we have in this one.

And, yes, I know, some people are deliberately avoiding having emotional investment in this one. And others are, for whatever reasons, not big Star Wars fans. All that is cool. All I know is, I have to be there on the first weekend, although we're actually waiting until Sunday.

Okay, seriously, now -- what has to happen (besides little or no Jar Jar, or Jar Jar's horrible bloody demise, or Natalie Portman suddenly thinking she's in Showgirls, or Ewan MacGregor thinking he's in The Full Monty, or Li'l Han Solo shooting Li'l Greedo first), I say, what has to happen to make you happy with Revenge of the Sith?

If Anakin cuts down Jar Jar with the light sabre, that would be worth the price of admission by itself. :)

I truly want to see the real fall from goodness of Anakin. I want a true emotional roller-coaster as he self-destructs from Palpa.. err Sidious' manipulation. ;-)

I want it dark, I do not want a happy ending other than the twins being saved.

I want Mace to go out with a major bang and Yoda torn between fighting to the death and the Force leading him into seclusion.

I don't want just another excuse for special effects.

And a nudie scene with Natalie Portman wouldn't hurt! :-)

Just to be a completest, I will be going with the gang to see the 12:01 showing of Sith, but I hold NO hope at all for it.

I know its Lucas' party, he can screw up what he wants to, but I have to admit I do feel kinda betrayed by him. I showed Sabrina the original three SW flicks, and damn, they were just as much fun as I remember.

Part of what I realized about the New three is that I don't give a DAMN about a single character. And the characters that do continue (forward? back?) into SW, Empire or Jedi have all been shown to be clueless, idiots or dicks. I just know they are going to show us the Chewy is GAY or something.

Chewy is present, that's all. No commentary about his preferences is explicit nor implied.

If you look sharp early in the film, you can see what appears to be the Millenium Falcon amongst some parked spaceships.

Oh yeah! Ewan Mcgregor ala Full Monty!?? I'm liking it. A lot.

More leaping about by Darth Maul's evil twin would be cool.

Just as long as it has some really truly decent acting, and some really truly decent writing along with the obligatory effects - I'll be happy.

Acting? Is that what they were doing?

I agree, decent acting would be wonderful, but I am not holding my breath. Great special effects seem almost a given. Bad acting also seems to be a given. If the acting were decent, I'm sure I would love any turn of the plot. Due to the acting the first two of this set of movies were OK, but not great. I mean they were so visually pleasing it was a shame they couldn't have been believable.

I'll be there opening night. It's a given.

What do I need to be happy? I want to be emotionally invested in the final light saber battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin. They handled characterization so poorly in Ep. 2 I'm thinking that might be impossible, but one must still live in hope. That scene just really should have been the emotional pay-off of the entire saga and I want more than just pretty special effects.

what has to happen to make you happy with Revenge of the Sith?

Easy:
  1. Plot
  2. Characters
In a pinch, I'll settle for one or the other. And, of course, there are other things that would be nice: good acting, clever dialog, good music, pretty special effects, sets that don't look like next week's toy commercials, eye candy, etc., but that's all fluff. Plot and characters win every time.

Natalie Portman suddenly thinking she's in Showgirls...

You know, when you've got a winner of an idea... I mean, let's think back to Ep. 2. Tattooine is hot, but the interior of that silver spaceship must have been mighty cold for poor, dear Padme. Her thermometers testified to that.

What must Georgie do to save Ep. 3 from being the Revenge of the Suck? Well, it's too late for him not to personally direct it. That man couldn't direct schoolchildren through a crosswalk, let alone actors. It will, I suspect, be fun to watch Hayden Christiansen get his ass whipped by Ewan MacGregor, so there's that much to look forward to, right? Of course, they won't be able to limit the violence to just robotic victims this time, will they? Real flesh-and-bone people will have to die; that's Vader's crime against Anakin's soul and against the Light Side and MUST happen.

Honestly, this one has the lowest potential for sucking, as I see it. It has the capability simply because of what part of the saga it tells to stand on its own despite the limitations of the director and his chosen boy toy, Mannequin Skywalker, or if you prefer, Whiny Angst Boy.

We'll see. I know this: I'm not paying full price to see it, and I won't be there opening weekend.

It is precisely because I was a big Strategic Defense Initiative fan that I have no emotional investment in the feature-length toy commercials they brought out to prequel 'em. They fooled me once with "The Phantom Movie"--shame on them.

Not that it's likely, but I *still* want to see the scene that justifies Jar Jar's whole existence in the series.

You know, the one where Anakin is standing on the lip of the volcano, with mighty internal struggles over which side of the Force he needs to follow.

Just as he is reaching his conclusion (for the Good side), Jar Jar walks up behind him, and slaps him on the shoulder with a "Hi, Ani! How you be doing?"...thereby causing both of them to slip into the cone.

As they fall, Ani wraps his hands around Jar Jar's neck... "You... you... IDIOT!"

And of course, since he killed one of his best friends, his path to the Dark Side is assured.

I will be happy if:

1. MacGregor has continued his growth as an actor. This seems likely.

2. The FX are as good as in the last two films. At least our eyes will not be offended.

3. The romantic subplot only takes up 20% of the film.

4. We don't get a hokey and imporbably seen with baby Luke, baby Leia, or a young Han Solo.

5. Threepio and Artoo's memories are wiped so that they really don't remember a thing when the original film begins.

6. Hayden Christiansen isn't as bad as he was in EpII.

I still like an idea I had I called the redemption of Jar Jar.

Basically when they smuggle Amidala off to Alderann, Anakin/Darth tortures Jar Jar to find out where they went. Jar Jar doesn't give them up, going out a hero, and all the fans get to see Jar Jar die a hideous death.

It'll never happen, but torturous death of Jar Jar is almost as much fan service as skimpy Amidala costuming.

In all seriousness:

The volcano lightsaber fight. I assume it'll be there, because everything points to it, including the trailers...but.

A logical explanation for Anakin not knowing about Luke (and especially not Leia, because he gets blindsided by her status as his daughter in ROTJ)--like, Padme dies in childbirth, but Anakin is taken to believe that the (singular) child died. This also explains why he doesn't go back to his family on Tatooine...because he doesn't think Luke exists.

The Jedi to die heroically, especially Mace (and I know that's coming).

Us to get a real taste for Anakin's evil. I don't want him being at all conflicted (he's so utterly not conflicted until Luke shows up again).

Ewan to continue his metamorphosis into Alec Guiness. (One of the highlights of Episode II was Ewan as Obi. "To get a drink," indeed.)

No more sappy dialogue. (Not happening, I know...I can dream.)

1> Does anyone know if those people are still standing in line at the wrong theater?

2> I'd like to see Jar Jar dead, or not in the film at all. (he did his bit in the senate). I'd like good characters. I don't really need plot, it's a friggin Star Wars movie. I'd like them not to screw with Chewbacca too much. I'd like to not watch 1 hour of video game sequences or stuffed teddy bear toys. (jar jar, pod race, etc..)

Episode 1: Jar Jar, Pod Race, 10 year old kid, too many aliens, no story.

Episode 2: Horrible horrible romantic dialouge, 30 minute video game sequence leaping through the factory. Other than that, I actually didn't hate episode 2. Some political commentary, a bit beneath the surface.

Episode 4: Very little plot, eye candy (for the time) Great characters (droids, solo, chewbacca), new ideas, fresh take on sf.

Episode 5: Monsterous plot twists (luke, I am your father..bam pow) Philosophical ideas, religion and sf combined in new ways. Tense cliffhanger ending.

Episode 6: Rehash of 1, horridly cute creatures. Rebuilding the death star, nothing new or unique.

My favorites, if you didn't guess are..

5, 4, 2, 6, 1. Of course I consider 1 one of the most overhyped worst films ever. And five (empire) one of the best. I'll be happy if this film offers more than RTOJ.

I'm sure i'll get blasted for thinking 2 is better than six, but it takes all kind right...

Not blasted, but... I'm one of the people who has very few problems with Ep 6. It did what it was supposed to do, in the way we thought it was going to happen. Yeah, the Ewoks were annoying (although they have become somewhat more tolerable on repeated viewings), and the new Special Edition deletion of the "Jub Yub" song and the insertion of Hayden Christensen over Sebastian Shaw in the last shot is annoying... but it does what it's supposed to do, finishes the story, and, for me, it works.

Well, we all know how it's going to end.

If I can remember whole bits and pieces of the movie, and not look at my watch too many times while the movie's running, then I'll be happy.

If we get treated to a scantily-clad Amidala, I'll be grinning.

If Jar Jar snuffs it, there will be Much Rejoicing.

And if Vader does a guest spot on The O'Reilly Factor and demonstrates his dark-side Jedi mind tricks on the host after Vader's been interrupted for the last time, I will stand up and cheer. Loudly.

I'm already happy with it, because it means there's no more SW movies... not that there's actually been a real SW movie since halfway through Return of the Jedi anyway. I ceased caring about Star Wars the very first frame of film that showed an Ewok... but it was a fun two and a half films up until that point. Haven't seen Episode I, or Alias Sith and Clones, and I have no intention of seeing the third one.

And dammit, I want a DVD of Star Wars the way I saw it in the theaters: "This is my tie fighter, and this is the box it came in!"

Not that I'm bitter.
