Mmmm, good article. I'm a big fan of Terry Gross of Fresh Air as well; I study her interview style every time I listen, even/especially when the subject is not one that normally interests me.

I've encountered a datum that seems at odds with his paragraph against Clear Channel however; they turn out to own the Air America station in Los Angeles, KTLK 1150 AM. Not the actions of a corporate sponsor of The Neo-Con Conspiracy, what? Or is it all a subtle control move? Jim and I have noticed frequent drop-outs and power interruptions in the past week or three.

Clear actually owns several AAR stations, including the one here in Ann Arbor (WLBY, 1290 AM). I think the corporation's just hedging their bets. And the uniformity of their music playlists is much more of a problem anyway, to my mind.

Lovely article, always enjoyed Kellor's take on things.

I have to admit, I am no fan of NPR.. nor Rush L. Not a big fan of the LEFT or the RIGHT.. too many agendas.

On the other hand, Air America works really well for me. I almost can't listen to NPR (Nice Polite Republicans) anymore, and I've never been able to handle Rush.

The fact that NPR gets it from both sides probably means they're doing something right. As opposed to Fox News, which even Hush Bimbeau acknowledges is right-leaning.

They are getting more conservative, though. FAIR went through the guests on Morning Edition and All Things Considered last year and found that NPR had quite a few more conservative guests than liberal ones.

The question isn't how many of which kinds of guest they have. The question is how guests are treated and how stories are told.

I can vouch for their growing conservatism over the past couple of years. Most egregious are Juan Williams (who I've always thought an untalented hack to begin with) and Mara Liasson, both of whom also work for Fox, and Cokie Roberts, who has gone full-blown crackpot. Surprisingly enough, her former on-air compadre, Kevin Phillips, went the other way, and has become, if not a liberal, an anti-Bush "true" conservative with a larger-than-average hunk of progressive libertarianism.

Good read, thanks for the link. I was a disc jockey a million years ago, and I know from experience that radio touches folks in ways other media can't. I hope the backswing he describes happens in my lifetime.
