Sunday we're having a full Deep Fried Lemurs outing, for the first time in quite awhile -- me, Anne, [livejournal.com profile] huskiebear, Tom, Karen, Mark. (Sharon has obligations, but we'll get her to it within the week.)

I don't usually do midnight movies anymore, but the temptation to go out tonight and stand in line is palpable. I really, really want this one to be good, and it's still hummin' along at 83% at Rotten Tomatoes. There's also the excellence of Clone Wars, and the sheer greatness of the Original Trilogy, which, even in Special Edition mode, is still pretty frickin' great.

In a lot of ways, though, I'm glad I've shaken off the emotional investment I might've had in it -- although it's sad that I've had to do that with several upcoming films, most notably Fantastic Four. Still a holdover from the joy and delight that was Ron Howard's Grinch, y'know? (N.B. If they ever let Joel Schumacher direct a Harry Potter film, someone's gonna die. Just so we've got that straight.) If Revenge of the Sith does not rock my world... neither will it destroy it.

So... how and when are you going, and how much do you have emotionally invested in it?

Although I liked the originals a lot, I was not as passionate about them as many, so I'm just goin' to hang with my friends. Emotional investment=0. If it's good, I get to see a good film. If it stinks, I'm there to laugh at it and hold everyone else up. Best of all possible worlds as far as I'm concerned.

Now when the new HP comes out....

I won't be seeing it until Tuesday the 24th, first showing after 4:30 PM, on the way home from work, same as with every other film I go to see (we get a lot of people who like to talk during films around here, so I try to go when the crowds are as small as possible). I see about 6 movies in theaters per year, so I only see the ones I have a desire to see. So, I have some emotional investment in those films, or I wouldn't bother to go to the theater. But I guess that after the latter Alien sequels, the Matrix sequels, and the Batman sequels, I've been conditioned to lower my expectations. I can say I had more emotional investment in the Lord of the Rings movies than in this one.

too much

From the moment I helped RB put aluminum foil and Christmas lights up at the movie house at Lakeforest Mall for Star Wars long ago in a lifetime far, far away I've invested far too much emotional investment in this darn thing. My kids are lucky they weren't named Han, Yoda, Darth, and Leia. Luke was way too whiny to ever have one of my kids named after him...now we know the apple doesn't fall far from the tree there.

My expectations are for a visually stunning but intellectually empty film like the last couple, just another vehicle to sell merchandise to kids. My emotional investment is 0. I hardly ever see movies, and there is a good chance I won't see this one at all unless someone invites me to go with them.

I feel horribly betrayed by Lucas.

But, I will be hitting the midnight show at the Emagine Theatre in Novi... Seen all the others at the first showing (twice got invited to the special charity premiers) so I suppose its worth being a completest.

I have HOPE this one will end it up on a high note.

Much like the "Matrix" saga, I HATE it when I picture in my head a much cooler story than the one that hits the screen.

I didn't have much of an emotional investment to start with; honestly, the only movie in the series that totally blew me away was A New Hope. Empire was decent, but I haven't liked anything since.

I'm going to go see it probably the third or fourth week, because I do enjoy stunt spectaculars and this promises to be a good one. I'm expecting a letdown for the story and for Christensen to once again utterly botch the role of his career.

I have no idea when I will get to see it - the day it opens I am going in for rotator cuff surgery. According to my doctor, it will be several days, if not weeks, before I feel like doing anything other than sitting in a heavily padded recliner and zoning out on good pain drugs.

However, seeing as how George totally blew any faith I might have had in him with the last movie, I don't see how he could possibly do any worse with this one. Y'all have fun - I'll catch up when the anaesthesia wears off...

(1) I love the icon. Hee!
(2) Good luck with the surgery.
(3) "Sitting in a heavily padded recliner and zoning out on good pain drugs" might be an excellent way to watch this movie. (I've not seen it, don't plan to in the short term, and have no real emotional investment in it.)

I will be going to the 12:01 showing (and it's tomorrow night, not tonight. ;-) )

I really have mixed feelings about it. I hope that it finally works. But, after little wooden boy parts 1 & 2, I won't be surprised if it doesn't.

Will this be an apology for the last two in this series or a love letter to those who loved the first "Trilogy"? What can I say I am a sucker for this stuff but as far as having a lot of emotional investment??? Not much.

I'll always remember as a reading after the first film was released that there would be nine episodes... now that would have been EPIC. Maybe I'll just watch Buster Crabbe as Flash on VHS now there was a Space Hero!

Not much excites me about this offering other than the nostalgia. I remember dragging my Dad to see the first “Star Wars”. Dear old Dad just celebrated 73, perhaps I should see if we both could get senior’s discounts this time around!

Rest assured I'll be there this weekend! Now lets talk about Spaceballs 2...

Oddly enough, although I've enjoyed the movies I don't have a huge emotional involvement in them. Star Wars is the cinematic version of Chinese food.. fun, tasty, but ultimately leaving you wanting something more. The main problem for me is that I never realy connected with the characters. I never really cared about them.

I'll go see it when Kiri and I have the change to spare for a matinee show. I'm expecting it to be spectacular, and it will be nice to see it come full circle.

I'm planning on catching it next week, after all my student-clients have their finals.

Surprisingly, or perhaps not, a number of students are catching the movie Thursday night. Finals start on Friday.

As I told one of my clients, "But...none of my students would do something that foolish. Right?"

As for emotional investment...this is Lucas' last chance. If he doesn't kill Jar-Jar this time, I'm going to come to his house and rip up all his X-Men.

Well, me and my Star Wars gaming buddies* plan to catch the 7 PM show at the Orleans Hotel/Casino this Thursday. That'll give me plenty of time to bring home and break in my new kitten, Murgatroid. Of course, I read the book, so I know what to expect. Yeah, it's cheating, bite me!

*Star Wars gaming... Could there BE anything geekier?

Probably won't see it any time soon. I can't even remember what happened in the last movie, and I was a HUGE Star Wars geek as a kid. I've realized that I really don't care about this version of Star Wars. It's not mine, and not meant for me. Give me whiny Luke over emotionless Anakin any day.

Opening night Balcony seats, bought a month ago. :-) Had they done what was done for LOTR, and done a trilogy showing, I would have been in heaven, and spent that 50 bucks a seat to get in.

I'll be at the 12:01 showing in Livonia with a great group of Fen... I'm not as emotionally involved in this as most of them, probably, since I loved the original trilogy much better than Eps 1 & 2... but I still want to see it. *grin*

The triple threat of getting older, the missus' aversion to crowds in movie theatres (they don't do well around people in wheelchairs, so we've discovered), and the movie not opening on a pay weekend will have us waiting a week to see it, but we'll probably see it at the Springdale DeLux 18 in northern Cinci. And I think this one'll we worth shelling out the extra couple of bucks to see it in digital in the Director's Hall.

kane and i are going saturday. i'm open to pretty much anything; i like the original three films, i was forced to watch E1 by an ex-boyfriend, and i watched E2 out of sheer morbid curiousity. E3 is the "big payoff" as some of my friends are calling it, but i don't really care one way or t'other. i mean, we all know how it ends.
i know i'm in serious danger of losing geek rights, but i've always been more a star trek girl than star wars. i'm more excited about the new star trek titan series of books than about episode 3. i go to the movie out of more morbid curiousity and also because the boyfriend wants to see it. so i guess my emotional investment is pretty much nil. now, if they were to make, say, a buffy movie that ran with the series, not the original film, i'd so have to be there opening night.
