It is official: I will be at ConFluence in Pittsburgh. However, I won't be getting there until Saturday afternoon. Friday-into-Saturday midnight, after all, is HBP Day....

So, how and when are you getting HBP, and how soon do you think you'll read it? (As I mention in comments, I'm picking it up Friday night, and I'm also getting the book on CD so I can listen to it to and from ConFluence. I hope to have it finished by the time I get home Sunday.)

...utter dork that I am, I ordered my copy of HBP from Amazon UK. Nifty "adult edition" cover, and bonus authenticity squee.

Of course, I may wind up having to wait an extra week or so, but hey, I wouldn't be a good Slytherin if I couldn't be patient about some things, right?

Hey. Not only am I getting the book that night, I'm getting the book on CD, so I can "read" it while driving to Pittsburgh. Go Gryffindor, but gimme the damn book.

Hey, nothing wrong with being gung-ho. I'm just terrified over what she's gonna do to my favorite characters...

...and I wish I had my UK-edition audio of the first book (Stephen Fry, it just doesn't get much cooler, I love my used book store) on CD instead of cassette. I'd love to be able to listen to it while I run my shabby little errands today.

Be jealous, then. B-D That's the only version on audio of any of the books that I own.

I used to have the US-edition audio of the second on CD... I've got it on mp3 on my hard drive but I'm not sure where the actual discs have gotten to. So tempting to break down and order the rest from Amazon UK (which gets a startling amount of business from me ever since I got my multiregion DVD player) but there are pesky things like food and kitty litter and Valium and Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Limited Edition blends (because ZOMG Springtime in Arkham, even if Yog-Sothoth smelled like laundry detergent and Mi-Go Brain Canister like fruit salad), and I still don't have all the audio versions of A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, and I really am a horrifically materialistic creature in some ways, aren't I?

I haven't even gotten a "50 Things I Am Not Allowed To Do At Hogwarts" or "You Might Be A Pureblood If" shirt from my own damn CafePress shop.

Yup, that tears it...

Between finally getting to see you perform, and the fact that Joe Giacoio's going to be there, this looks like another ConFluence where I don't leave the Filk room. But at least I'll have good music... and, in all probability, a copy of HBP. I just haven't figured out where I'm going to pre-order it from yet...

I preordered it from Overstock.com, $17.39 including shipping.

Randy Hoffman mentioned that they're having a release party at ConFluence, so you can probably buy one there.

I've done the Rochester-Pittsburgh route more times than I care to count (why yes, I'm in the SCA, why do you ask? :-) ). Takes about 5 hours each way. A little bit more than I like to do on a daytrip, but certainly nothing that's going to tax anyone's driving endurance.

This is where a PT job at the local Waldenbooks comes in very handy. I have a copy reserved for me, at 40% off the list price and I can get in before the store opens and be first in line. I'll be reading it that night, since I have to work at Dayjob on Friday.

I'm getting the UK copy shipped over, and also getting the US copy at the midnight thing, hanging out with friends before getting the book, then promptly going home and gleefully reading it from stem to stern before sleeping. Making my Quidditch robes for the big to-do as we speak.

Right now, it's the last big 'dress up in costume' fandom until the next big LotR/SW sort of hoo-hah happens again. So what the heck.

My plan is to go to the midnight release party at my BN (I work there) and then read it in spurts over the next several days (I read things rather slowly the first time through because I tend to re-read dialogue several times). However my plans may be foiled by the scheduling fairy (I asked for the night off plus the weekend with 3 months plus notice but the scheduling fairy is fickle). If I have to work that night, I will at least be able to take it home with me (I hope) and get started on it Saturday.

Have it preordered a BN. (My friends gave me a gift card there.) Plan on showing up in my Hogwarts t-shirt, aquiring the book and reading until I fall asleep on the couch.

So, how and when are you getting HBP, and how soon do you think you'll read it?

If history is any judge, I'll wait until someone I know passes a copy along to me.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see what all the fuss about Harry Potter is about. They're fine, yeah; I've read all four books so far (or is it five by now?), just not good enough to warrant all that hype.

Why doesn't Franny K. Stein get the same amount of attention as Rowling's and Snicket's work?

Marketing. Franny K. Stein isn't pushing for her publisher to or being pushed by her publisher to the extent of the others.

I will be at at least one HP party -- my town's doing one again this year (MuggleNet et al took us over for the last book), and I may have to stop by the one in Mount Prospect. Then I will engage in a marathon reading battle with my sister (odds are we'll tie as we read at EXACTLY the same speed). Or get on a plane to go to the College Democrats convention in Washington and never finish the damn book and go nuts all weekend. You know how it is.

Oak Park, IL, turns into Diagon Alley for the day. We'll go there to gawk at costumes and grab some butterbeer, but won't pick up a copy of the book until the next day. As to how soon I read it, it depends on whether my wife gets first dibs or I do. Probably my wife, since it's coming out on her birthday.

On HBP: When Hpoop came out, I walked into WaldenBooks the morning it was released, didn't wait in line, got the 40% discount and was reading it before the people who had pre-ordered it from Amazon had theirs delivered. And read the whole thing before the next morning. Then Diana took it up and read it before the next day was over.

Now we've read all five to Sabrina aloud and she's all pumped for the next one.. she's trying to talk us in to allowing her to go to one of the over night HP parties at the bookstore.

The problem is, how will we read this one? Sabrina isn't quite up to reading it herself. And she'll be chomping at the bit for us to read it to her. So right now we'll get our copy on release day, and have family Read Aloud time and Diana and I will take turns reading it to all of us.

But the more I consider this, I might get the Audio Book verision too and save my voice..

Stop tormenting me with how great this con is going to be. I have a conflict that weekend and I can't afford to go anyway.

The B. Dalton I work at is having it's first Midnight release party, which I'll be working... so as soon as I get off work at O'dark-thirty in the morning I'll be able to start reading! I don't really expect to sleep...
