Sadness. Actress Anne Bancroft, who was Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker, Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate, and the love of Mel Brooks's life, has passed away at the age of 73. Here's the Yahoo news story, and here's her IMDB listing.

In Mel Brooks' To Be Or Not To Be, the movie starts off with Brooks and Bancroft singing Sweet Georgia Brown in Polish.
When they finish, a voice over comes in that announces that for the benefit of the people who do not speak Polish, the rest of the film will be in English.
She has this great look of relief on her face ...

I saw an interview with her regarding that scene. She said her dialogue coach would say to her, say, "Pooshta koavitch," and she would reply "Pooshta koavitch," and be told, "No, that's not it." That's when I understood the linguistic concept of "minimal pairs." And that's my favorite memory of her.

Oh, that is sad. I loved her in The Graduate especially.
I suspect she was a classy lady. (and probably very patient to be Mel Brooks wife).
