In case you haven't been keeping track of DC's various meanderings, here's a fascinating guide to who's hot in fanfic. I didn't realize Tim Drake was so... popular.

I tell ya. I kinda wish someone would do the same for Marvel, so I'd have a FRICKIN' CLUE as to who's alive and dead over there.

Strangely enough, Jean is dead right now, and it doesn't look like she's going to come back for a while.

Just about all the DC fic that can be found on lj is categorized here. Note that there are 277 entries for Tim Drake. Dick Grayson comes in second, I believe, with 201. The writer of the overview, significantly, is not talking about a character's popularity with the larger comic-reading public's but with the fic-writing public. (Also, Batman's been just a total jerk lately in the comics, so people feel sorry for all the people who have to work with him. That's my theory, anyway.)

That's pretty much what I was thinking -- angst for the memories, and all that. I'm still intrigued by the Batman/Wonder Woman pairing, which I understand had some basis in the actual comics, although I've always been a Batman/Catwoman kinda guy myself (which I tie directly to my first true lust, for Julie Newmar). I haven't been reading any Batman lately; has he forgotten his primary mission, i.e., protecting people, in the never-ending quest for grimness?

When I first linked the page, I looked over that list, and noticed that some writers are specifically working off the various animated series, rather than the comics. Kinda tangly.

Yeah, I understand that they actually kissed at some point during the Obsidian Age storyline. A lot of people are being influenced by the animated series as well, since that really plays up their connection. Or at least Batman's giant, giant crush on Wonder Woman, which is fairly amusing.

Not really. It's more that in the quest for grimness he's been a complete jackass to all his friends, as the original poster noted. The writers seem convinced that Batman not only can't have friends, he'll be a complete asshole to anyone who dares care about him. I'd say it's canonical that he doesn't have the best people skills in the world, but to deliberately push away his allies doesn't seem quite in keeping with someone as supposedly smart as he is.

animated series vs. comics

Yeah, there are a few writers that do that exclusively, or do stories that do that exclusively. Animated Tim Drake is very, very different from comic Tim Drake, after all. (Actually, animated Tim Drake is so young that I think porn involving him is massively disgusting and I won't go near it, but that's a soapbox for another time.) Also, comic canon is now so confused and involves so many different series that it's really, really hard to keep up.

Heh. Kinda like Spider-Man. I just read J. Michael Straczynski on Amazing and have done.
