All the shit going down in the world, and "Maria Sharapova to Wear Gold-Flecked Shoes" is treated as news of some sort.

Okay, what's the headline that made your eyes roll hardest and fastest lately?

Easy, but I suspect eye-rolling was only a split-second before the epithets began:

The news that Guvn'r Jeb was going to investigate how long it took Michael Schiavo to call 911 when Terri collapsed all those years ago, now that the autopsy has cleared him of any abuse allegations.

Beat me to it. What tiny amount of respect I may have had for the Gov went out the door with that crap.

Anything with the words "Micheal Jackson" in it. The whole Jeb crap comes in second, for me.

Are you talking about mainstream news articles? I would hope that any professional journalist (however loosely you choose to define that term) would know how to spell "Michael".

Yeah, well, typos and misspellings aside, I'm still sick of hearing about it.

Comics Looking to Spread A Little Laughter on the Web

for its superficial and inaccurate introduction of webcomicts to my mother's generation. This thing caused a lot of fights in the webcomics community, where we were already fighting over that webcomics documentary trailer. Feh.

I saw one on CNN.com a while ago - something like "Marijuana use highest in college towns".

I mean, really, who needs to be told that? It was right above another stupid headline, but I forget that one.

Right. Or the ever popular: "College Students Like to Drink Beer, survey says."

I remember from back in the day an article on the annual arrival of the Grateful Dead in Hartford, Conn for the spring tour. The article made the spoectacular revelations that Deadheads a: pumped money into the local economy by purchasing food and staying in local hotels, and b: tended to smoke weed.

There's always a "White Woman In Trouble" story. This is one of the (many, many) problems with media consolidation. A company should not be considering the potential generation of Movie of the Week With Valerie Bertinelli and Swoozy Kurtz when deciding to cover a story.

Tom Cruise assaulted and perpetrators arrested and sent to jail. 4 guys running a "punkd" type show shot him with a squirt gun disguised as a microphone. The press is praising Cruise for "Keeping his cool". Yeah, right...

The actual Headline from Yahoo News is

"Prank Against Tom Cruise Leads to Arrest"

I'm so glad the news stays current on these important affairs of national security...

Combo headlines from the front page of the Washington Post. One article about Michael Jackson. One article about a retried lynching case. Printed side by side, leading to this "headline:"

MICHAEL JACKSON DECLARED NOT GUILTY JUDGE SETS VERDICT ASIDE, DECLARES RACIAL BIAS

Last week, the headline of one paper was about a breakthrough in stem cell research. Ok, this has the potential to extend and/or better the life of everyone who knows anyone with all sorts of medical problems. The headline of the paper in the next box was that the hockey players and owners are close to a deal. OK, this is Canada, and I realize that there are people here who actually give a fuck. But on a day in which there was news that was far more important to far more people, the hockey headline clearly belonged in the sports section.

Actually, this headline makes me happy,

Gay Rights Supporters Rally, Assail County Policy As Hurtful

but it's a followup to a story that doesn't:

Hillsborough bans county from recognizing gay pride

Bear in mind that the guy on the left is now a Hillsborough County Commissioner.
