Looks really awesome on the web page. I did some initial thinking about writing something like this a decade ago, but I didn't pursue it because the technology to support it wasn't there.
It's annoying that they refuse to say how big the download is. I'm trying to download it now, and even after the download has started it still says "unknown file size". I suspect I will give up before it all oozes down the string.
Oh, btw, what is "L337" supposed to mean? I understand most of that family crimes against the language that I see, but that one just makes me go "huh?"
Actually, someone has; I remember hearing an interview with 'em on the radio. But I can't remember anything useful like the title of the book or the author's name.
I did manage to download GoogleEarth. The download is only about 10MB, but the maps are downloaded as you look at them. So it's pretty cool, but really amazingly painful over dialup. Yes, they say you need a broadband connection. And they're right. But I am glad I took a look at it. Even though it doesn't have quite enough resolution to see my house.
I assumed that was intentional, so you couldn't look at Mrs Wotsername from number 23 sunbathing in the nood...not that I would, of course, heaven forfend...
It is a rather neat little toy, though. Hello Earth....
My house/apartment is visible in enough resolution that you can identify the (repossessed) car in the front yard, see the table on the deck, and notice dark spots where the skylights in the bedroom are.
