A series of devastating explosions. Casualties, deaths, damage. Nosemonkey is liveblogging it at Europhobia. (Thanks to Friendly Fire in comments at Eschaton for the heads-up.)

I'm not sure where in England some of you on my friend's list are -- are you okay?

Gwen, Gavin, and Joe are due back from Singapore today; 3:30 pm London time. I hope the company car Joe's employer is providing doesn't get tangled up in the traffic re-routing, and can get them to the apartment okay.

4 bombs: 3 in the Tube, one on a bus. The photos of the bus are quite graphic. There are at least 40 people confirmed dead, and "casualities" (Americans: read "injured") in the hundreds, possibly thousands. A small group claiming to be a part of Al Qaida has claimed responsibility, though it may be opportunistic. It is most definitely an act of planned terrorism; a suicide bomber is speculated to be involved in the bus incident. Injuries range from cuts & bruises to severed limbs, smoke inhalation, and blast wounds.

You can't get into the city, and officials are now attempting to get people out of the city; busses are gradually being brought back, and some trains (not subway trains) are running. Cell & land phone lines are swamped.

The most amazing thing is the response of the Brits: they are stoic, calm, and determined. No surprise from the people who were blitzed in WWII. Everyone has condemned the attack--politicians and religious leaders--, which seems to be linked to the G8 summit. (It's too well-planned to be linked to the 2012 Olympics.)

> 2012 Olympics

I seen it suggested it could have been timed for the Olympics, with terrorist teams in all the possible winning cities. I don't believe it myself.

The last time a bus got blown up ('twas in the Aldwych) it made a heck of a mess. They really aren't that strong bodied you know.

It might be an "involuntary" suicide bomber there...you know, the one who didn't check his timer correctly.....
