This could be interesting. Or it could suck worse than GrAvatar and HaloScan. I guess we'll find out.

Any oddball flicks you're looking forward to? Not the big guns -- the ones that slip under the radar.

Not so much under the radar, as you "have to know" or you might miss it.

Serenity.

Most people who are long-time Firefly fans will know. But it's always good to get the word out. You Can't Stop The Signal, ya know? :)

When I first saw the trailer for Sky High, the first thing I though of was Teenagers From Outer Space. Then I was disappointed to find out that it wasn't.

Well, what about Brothers Grimm? I'm sort of mixed on it, but it's Gilliam, so I'll watch. There's Corpse Bride, of course; a weird poster I saw yesterday for Night Watch (not a Pratchett flick...a Russian fantasy/horror, I think), and then there's A Sound Of Thunder, which to say the least I'm worried about. Though one or two of those might get promoted to "big gun" by the time relase rolls around.

Indeed. I'm hoping BG and CB will be as good as they look, and I hope Bradbury got paid a lot for ASoT, which looks frickin' dreadful.

. . . frankly, it looks like "Sky High" is a rip-off of "PS 238" (http://archive.gamespy.com/comics/nodwick/ps238/comics/ps238_new01.htm), right down to the kid without powers.

I believe, in fact, that Aaron Williams is trying to do something about that. Between that and the Shark Boy lawsuit, some people just ain't payin' attention.

Shark Boy lawsuit?

I haven't heard about that. What's going on?

That new movie The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3D is very possibly infringing on the copyrighted character of an indie professional wrestler, Shark Boy (http://www.sharkboy.net/). I hope he wins big.

I have been reading Aaron Williams' livejournal [livejournal.com profile] ps238principal . Though his fans have mentioned Sky High to him (see the bottom of http://www.livejournal.com/users/ps238principal/14039.html), he seems unconcerned about similarities.

Some ideas are too universal. Remember the similarity between the flat cats in Robert Heinlein's "The Rolling Stones" and the tribbles in Star Trek's "The Trouble with Tribbles"? Heinlein did not feel he had a claim on the idea, for it was based on real ecology, such as the rabbits in Australia.

The idea of a school for young superheroes is an old one. Using a non-super character in such a school as a person for the readers to identify with is pretty obvious. In Marvel Comic's "New Mutants" series in the 1980's, Doug Ramsey (Cipher) had such a minor superpower (he could speak any language) that he often served as the normal person among the superpowered students.

The true merit of PS-238 is not that it is a completely new idea, but that Aaron Williams writes it so very well.

Hadn't heard of Sky High before. You're right, it could either be really good or it could suck. However, the trailer certainly made us grin to watch it...

Okay, they had the casting cool to get Lynda Carter as the principal (and Bruce Campbell as coach)... Plus two members of Kids in the Hall and Cloris Leachman.

This sounds much more promising.

My version of the trailer was jumpy, so I missed that (and hadn't visited IMDB); that is indeed cool casting.

I may make a double feature of Sky High and the FF just to compare notes.

I've heard good things about Murderball. I would ordinarily ignore anything with a title like that, but I've read that it's quite a good documentary on wheelchair rugby.

I've been told that The March of the Penguins is actually quite good. May have to wait for the DVD, though. But really, how can you loose listening to Morgan Freeman for 90 minutes - no matter what he's talking about...

I saw the trailer for this when we went to see Batman Begins last weekend. Knowing Disney's track record on such efforts (Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century, Now You See It..., and their other recent "skiffy" projects), I"m not holding out much hope, but if Kurt Russell's returning to the fold...maybe there's something to it after all.
Most of the other stuff I'm looking forward to is still well above the radar (Serenity, Stealth, The Island), but I wish I could see Howl's Moving Castle here in Cincy in a theatre that is a bit more handicap-friendly...but after Spirited Away (visually stunning, but hard to follow) I can wait for it's release on DVD.

We're probably going to see it when it comes to the cheap theater.

Feels like a cross between PS238 and Zoom's Academy... but it looks cute.
