Just heard a few minutes ago on Air America Radio that the Metro Atlanta area might have a hell of a time getting gasoline by the weekend. The region is serviced by two main pipelines that Katrina has screwed up (by taking out the electrical infrastructure so that the big pumps don't run). So, plan your gasoline use carefully, and fill up whenever you can, whatever the price. Tennessee and southern Georgia seem like good bets, but don't take chances.

Are y'all sure it's a good idea to go at all? I'm having trouble even reaching anybody in Atlanta by phone this morning.

OK, I'm a well known weather wimp and worry wart but DO make sure that you can actually call the hotel and confirm before you go voluntarily into a federal disaster area, OK?

Well, I had no trouble calling the Hyatt, and they said there was no problem from the weather. So, that much seems good.

Is Atlanta actually a federal disaster area?

Aye, maybe not. I'm just being a Jewish Mother here.

So the con is on apparently ... still, I bet if the cell phones are affected, which they seem to be today at least, then shopping with credit cards is going to be impacted in the dealer's room. Horrors!

No, it's not. There are, of course, residual effects from such a huge storm, but Atlanta itself is fine. I suspect some of the worry I've heard about it is based on looking at the weather radar and still seeing this big huge precipitation system over the southeast... but Katrina has been pretty much defanged.

The problem now is the flooding in the Big Easy.

I'm glad yours are... we've got People in Atlanta whose "circuits are busy" still. Thanks for the words of reassurance anyway. OK, stay dry, be well.

Local girl, here. :)

Gas is between $2.89 - 3.49/gal right now. It seems to be more expensive in the suburbs, though there are a few stations who aren't ripping us off.

There are a few gas stations out of regular, so you're forced to buy premium. And there are stations that are out of everything. We are being told that these stations are out of gas only because everyone is panicking - which I can attest to, because I was out of gas and had to get some. The lines are RIDICULOUS, but hopefully they'll die down over the weekend.

Bottom line, don't wait to get gas until you need it. You *may* have to drive around a bit to get some.

As for the phones, there aren't any major problems in the Metro area - my husband works for Bell South. Most of the bad weather was outside the perimeter.

Wishing everyone a safe journey,

Katy

Gas is about the same price here in Louisville, KY. We don't have anyone out yet that I know of. I know I feel guilty everytime I go out of town for a con. I think, is it worth the cost of this energy for me to go out of town to have fun?

Bottom line, yes, it is. Even though it's a hell of a lot more expensive to fill a tank than it was just a few days ago, it still comes out to, for most people, a burger and fries.

I don't normally experience "enviro guilt" before a con, but I sure am feeling guilty about something this go 'round.

A city is treading water and I'm making sure I have enough money to buy the Weasley twins' autograph. Obviously, Perspective and I haven't met.
