Date: 2005-09-02 02:44 pm (UTC)Right now my family is routing our money through a friend in Mississippi, an evacuee, who is volunteering with her church and cooking meals for other evacuees. That's the advantage of working through friends or smaller groups... the money we deposited for her Wensday will be food on the table for people today.
If you are lucky enough to be in touch with a friend who made it out, but is saying 'there's nothing you can do for me where you are' there is... While most banks require identification to get money OUT of an account, they don't care who puts money IN. If there is a local branch of that bank near you, offer to deposit enough money to cover another night or two in their hotel.
If you're looking for how to make your donation go further, check with your employeers if you work for a large company. Many are offering to match donations to the Red Cross if you do a bit of paperwork. Lowe's in some locations is matching contributions from customers. Other businesses may do the same.
