I haven't been doing much on Katrina because, frankly, I'd be here all day and all night, and the web page would be stained with tears. In the midst of all this, one or two things might slip in. This is one.

Bob Denver, known to us all as Gilligan, has passed away at the age of 70.

Known to some of us as Maynard G. Krebs. Beatnik, psychic, and hoopy frood.

Damn.

Link seemed to be broken: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050906/ap_on_en_tv/obit_denver is the new one.

Damn. A lot of good childhood memory-giving actors dying this year. :(

Actually, "Lynch" might have been a better choice.

We'll miss ya, little buddy.

You added some laughter and colour to a very dull grey childhood

Tom, I guess you're younger than I thought.
You of all people I would have expected to refer to his earlier incarnation as Manerd G.Krebs

I do remember that. But that's not who most people remember him as. It's like with Eddie Albert -- dozens of roles, known for two (Oliver on Green Acres and the warden in The Longest Yard).

I'm sure Jim Backus and Natalie Schafer are standing along the pearly gates with Alan Hale, Jr, who probably has his arms wide open hollering "Welcome Home, little buddy!". And I have to shed a tear at the silence of the bongos as Maynard G. Crebbs is no more.

Someone else today said, "Gone to that 3 hour tour in the sky."

My dingbat officemate, however, said, "Didn't he die a few years ago? In a plane crash?" [I shoulda beaten him with the bat, I shoulda.]

Darn and double drat ...

... my friends here in the UK have wondered why I've been buying the Gilligan's Island DVD boxsets as they've been coming out ... but it was such a part of my childhood (the years I spent growing up in the US) that it's comforting to just have them there ...

... everyone dies (sad but true) and I hadn't really thought about him and what he was doing now ... but his performances will always be a part of what made me who I am now.

Indeed, farewell little buddy ...
