The real question is, could we do it? Is there any provision in law to recall a prez and vice-prez? ('Cause you know we gotta get rid of both of them, or nothing changes.) Or is impeachment the only route we have to this outcome which is greatly to be desired?
I wonder if anyone has ever tried to impeach BOTH the Prez and the VP at the same time.
There is nothing even vaguely resembling a power of recall in the US Constitution. Impeachment or a determination that the incumbent is incapacitated are the only ways to get rid of a President once he's in, and when the Presidency becomes vacant, there is a rigidly defined line of succession for who takes over. As long as the Republicans control Congress and the White House, everyone on the whole list is people just as bad as Bush. (If the public got outraged enough that the loyal Republican congress was going to be lynched as soon as they stepped out of Washington and they did impeach, you would see Tom Delay push the figurehead Hastert aside and take over as Speaker of the House -- number 2 in the line of succession after the Vice President -- and Cheney would promptly resign. Yes, that's my prediction -- in the unlikely event that Bush leaves office before the next election, when the dust settles Tom Delay will be President. If that doesn't scare you enough to stop wasting your breath talking about impeachement without first electing a Democratic Congress, I can't imagine what would.)
The only way short of civil war to fix the situation is for the people to wake up and throw the bums out at the next election. All it would take is about 60% of the popular vote (gotta overcome the fraud).
