No, really. Not a big one -- just a few shuffles of the Free Stuff MP3s (and making them all downloadable, rather than bothering with Streaming Audio 101), a few tweaks and twitches here and there, and an update of the Calendar on the main page. I should have some more stuff by early next week.

I declare an Open Thread -- how you all doin'?

More the move. Everything is in one of N categories: Already packed (78 boxes or carry as-is things for the movers; plus 3 suitcases, 2 laptop bags, the attache case, and 2 boxes for the car), furniture (emptied and erady to move, except for the liquor cabinet), still-necessary (the house network, the third box for the car, toiletries, bedding, a day's worth of kitchen stuff for lunch tomorrow, and the carrying containers therefor), and unpacked (everything else, including all the breakables, most of the electronics, and whatever I didn't have boxes to pack stuff in). I won't know 'til Wednesday when on Thursday the movers'll show up to finish packing; I won't know 'til Thursday when on Friday the movers'll show up to load; I won't know 'til Friday when I'm skipping town. I don't know for sure where (other than "cheap motel off the interstate") I'll sleep Fri and Sat and possibly Sun nights; I don't know what apartment/condo/townhouse I'll be staying in once I've moved to Minneapolis. It's a little more of an uncommon stress than I'm used to. (It's also my fourth cross-country move — MI to TX to IL to MA to MN — so I'm as on top of things as I can be. But ick.)

No job stresses yet, but I start on Tuesday the 20th as I arrive in town, so things there should be... entertaining.

I'm doing just fine. My boss is retiring and he and the VP asked if I wanted his job (I was the first one they asked). I laughed. So did they.

His job is, basically, take my job, triple the amount of paperwork and tack on 10,000 miles of driving each year.

I'm already at the edge of leaving over the 24/7 on call life style and unpredictable hours.. I don't need to add more to it.

Okay, in the name of truth, I don't need to do this... For The Amount They Are Paying. The position does pay more, but I feel it doesn't pay enough to cover the headaches.

The three of us concur that it is not a job for someone with a family.

I feel VERY good that A] they asked me first, even if they didn't expect me to actually take them up on the offer and B] that they included me in on the conversation as to who would make a good replacement.

The fellow I'm championing has older, just about to leave the house kids and he's anal when it comes to paperwork. The company Prez will love him.

Well, my van is about to lose its timing chain, so we can't drive it more than the minimum required. The mechanic strongly advised us not to waste the money fixing it when the van has this many miles on it.

I'm really worried that if we try to finance a new vehicle, it will lead to Bad Things Happening. We previously had a car repossessed while I was unemployed (well, technically, I had a job delivering pizza, but even reporting my wages, I was still getting an unemployment check). Made a vivid impression.

Hey, if I get pleasantly surprised by the Mega Millions ticket in my pocket, I'll e-mail you. :) At $200 million -- let's see, lop off, say, $80 million, 'cause I'd take it in a lump sum, and another $50 million to be absolutely sure of covering the taxes... that'd still give me $70 million to play with. Yeah, a whole lot of lives in my immediate vicinity would instantly upgrade.

Heh. I told God a while ago that if He ever gave me a lottery win like that, 50% was going straight to charity.

(Then my brother explained to me that, no, you don't give it off the top, you do it annually... but since I'll probably never have it, I don't need to worry about which way to do it. :-) )

On the one hand - it's nice to automate things, but on the other hand - ye gods the kluges you have to do to get things to work.

Life is pretty good actually - I have a brand new, shiny, toy to play with - a new laptop. The shoulder is recovering well from surgery, and I am still working full time. (Not sure how long the full time stuff will last, but hey, it's already lasted a month longer than I thought it would.)

Everyone is healthy, I am actually writing fiction again, ConChord was a fair success, and LosCon is coming up reasonably soon. What more could one ask for? (except one of those winning lottery tickets you were talking about up there somewhere, of course...)

Of course, the Smirking Chimp is still President, but I guess I can't ask for everything.

How am I doing...
No job, and no immediate prospect of a job.
[even the local coffee&donuts place won't hire me with my back]
Down to my last few cents, literally.
3000+ miles from home.
Low probability of getting home to my family for Xmas, or at all maybe.

OTOH;
At least I have a nice place to stay where they don't ask for rent, feed me and let me use their net connection. [no I'm not in prison]. Which is more than a lot of people can say. And there's always hope, maybe.

If all else fails I can try and get myself deported.

Finally saw "The Aristocrats" this past Sunday.

Several people left in the first 5 minutes, apparently having no idea what this movie was about.

I think it's worth seeing, but if you go there thinking it's going to be a bunch of comics trying to make you laugh, you'll be dissapointed. It's really more a look at comics just chatting and being themselves, which is good for a few laughs, to be sure, but hardly enough to make you roll in the aisles.

Meantime, I'm working on my own version of the joke. If i ever meet you face-to-face again, I'll be sure to tell you how it goes.

That's the first I've heard of that one.

Well, let's see. According to the U.S. Northen Command (http://www.northcom.mil/index.cfm?fuseaction=news.factsheets&factsheet=5), the PCA
generally prohibits U.S. military personnel from direct participation in law enforcement activities. Some of those law enforcement activities would include interdicting vehicles, vessels, and aircraft; conducting surveillance, searches, pursuit and seizures; or making arrests on behalf of civilian law enforcement authorities. Prohibiting direct military involvement in law enforcement is in keeping with long-standing U.S. law and policy limiting the military’s role in domestic affairs.

The United States Congress has enacted a number of exceptions to the PCA that allow the military, in certain situations, to assist civilian law enforcement agencies in enforcing the laws of the U.S. The most common example is counterdrug assistance (Title 10 USC, Sections 371-381). Other examples include:

(insurrection, nuclear/chemical/biological attacks, etc.)
It also unequivocally states:
The PCA does not apply to the U.S. Coast Guard in peacetime or to the National Guard in Title 32 or State Active Duty status.
In other words, bullshit. Why do these evil fucks continue to defend their incompetent, barely trained chimp?

Just finished typing up more fanzines for listing on Ebay for a dealer. (It was either that or work on their baudy CD tonight and I did the CD work last night...)

I stopped by here to see what was doing and then raided your free downlaods. (I had most, but extra music by you is always worth it...) :)

I did notice 2 links that might be broken... Calisto and Five Years (audio) might be down.

What's the status on 24h project #2?

I know the feeling of getting things to a duplicator... I have to get the 2nd printing of a CD to a duplicator (once I decide on one) to do a 100 CD print run. 1st printing was CD-R on my computers for 100 copies. I am NOT doing that again. Its just easier to pay someone else to do it. (Even if I can do the CD for 1/3rd the cost.)

The real deadline is Late Oct, but a CD-R 1.5 printing might occur for one convention that the artist (NOT me, I sing in the key of off) or more approriately with Pirate Day next week... The Key of Arrr...

Well, I've done that, a number of times, for CD-Rs of Live at GAFilk and Badgers and Gophers etc. The thing is, I'd really like this to have the full professional-printing-and-pressing actual-CD treatment. If I can't do it, I can't do it, and I'll end up burning 'em. But the plan is to get it pressed.
