Okay, I don't need a new computer right now. Everything I have does what I need, and mostly with style.

But this is frickin' adorable. And with the kind of specs that make you say to yourself, "Y'know, that little puppy'd be useful, wouldn't it?"

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] denali1 for pointing it out.

Almost. I'm curious as to the microphone input, and what sound system it's got on the mobo.

Current portable solution is working out fine, though. :)

Suffice it to say that the input itself isn't the problem. It's what's onboard, or attached elsewhere, to manage the sound. A USB Audigy solution, for instance, would work well.

At which point, I checked the FAQ. Straight-up AC '97 (http://tinyurl.com/da6xp), which is more than good enough for standard audio recording and editing.

I think a USB Audigy would be bigger than the OQO itself.

I was just imagining you walking around a convention recording your latest track. Literally.

It's darling -- you just want to pick it up and hug it...but typing on those itty bitty keys would be SUCH a pain.

No problem. A USB keyboard and you're good.

Very cute. I quite fancy one of these (http://www.gbax.com/indexgp2x.html).

Hm. That ain't bad at all. As long as you're not doing intensive multimedia on it, that would fit the bill for most folks. The only possible problem would be the native screen resolution, which is kinda small these days.

Screen resolution isn't bad compared with a Gameboy, Zire, or iPod Photo, and it will do a low-res Amiga screen (assuming someone ports an Amiga emulator at some point).
It's not going to replace a Windows machine, but it's a fraction the price of the OQO. (And a fraction the storage ability of an iPod, so it's not going to replace that either, but how many games can you play on an iPod?)

Only thing I want to know...

Can you run Linux on it?

Absolutely (http://tinyurl.com/cpsab). But no one's created native drivers yet. It'll happen.

Isn't it a little ironic that a system based on a Transmeta chip isn't Linux by default, since Transmeta is the company Linus Torvalds works for?

still not there yet for me at least

I've been looking, sort of half-heartedly, for a portable device I can use as a digital photo album. It needs to have a high enough resolution display to actually be useful for looking at photos, enough memory to hold all the photos I'd ever want to show poeple, and be simple enough to use that I can pass it around and expect people to actually be able to page through pictures without help. Oh, and I need to be able to afford it. The OQO looks marginally workable for everything except affording it; 800x480 is smaller than I want but probably as much as I really need. The "up to 3 hour" advertised battery life doesn't impress. But the $1900 list price (which doesn't even include a battery charger!?) is way out of range. If I'd been willing to spend that much when I had a job, I'd already have a laptop that was superior in every way except for size.

The GP2X, on the other hand, has a nice price, but 320x240 isn't "kinda small" to me; it renders the machine completely useless.

It includes the AC cord, which charges the battery when installed.

The accessories listed are replacement and upgrades you can purchase.
