Turns out that humans are genetically inclined to help one another. Which certainly works for me. If our freakin' government isn't gonna do it, it's up to us.

• This weekend is the eighth Acorn Music & Verse filk in Ann Arbor, run by shadowriderhope. It's not gonna go as long as usual, I suspect, because Christine Lavin is performing a charity concert for MCREST. (She'll be joined by the Mistletones.) Even if you can't make it out there, MCREST can always use help.
• One of my own local food banks is Food Gatherers.
• National food bank finder sites include Feeding America and strength.org.
• kshandra informs us that britgeekgrrl and her husband dancingshaman could really use some help. See, dancingshaman has opted not to continue chemo, and he hasn't got long left, and they need $1400 for his cremation. Her PayPal addy is johanna_mead at yahoo dot com. If you can't donate financially, there's a group for those who can give time and energy.
• On a somewhat brighter note, there's a satirical effort to pass a law in California outlawing divorce. Because Prop 8 doesn't go far enough, y'see. Check out RescueMarriage.org.

ETA: idancewithlife informs us in comments that Alex did pass away. Condolences and gentle songs to britgeekgrrl and their family. They did get sufficient donations to cover the cost of cremation, and thanks to everyone who kicked in.

Please consider the website a mode of communication that may prove helpful and not the only option. It's certainly not just for local people, because it can be used to provide announcement-based mailing list information. There will be times, I'm sure, when britgeekgrrl does not have time or energy to update LJ. The website is a way to update folks in another modality.

I would absolutely love to saddle the Prop 8 people with an anti-divorce movement on their backs. It'd lose them 2/3 of their adherents, and make the other third look even stupider and more hypocritical than they are. I think this avenue has been too little seriously explored, because most of the people on the side of sanity in this matter are not inclined to be Machiavellian enough. :)

Despite being between jobs, I'm still continuing my donations to the ASPCA. Pets suffer too from economic downturns and they need our help as well. Our pets add so much to our lives. I'd rather give up my house than any one of my cats.
