Machinima, in these cases using World of Warcraft to make quasi-erotic/comedy music videos.

Obviously, this is a more limited-audience kinda thread.
  • WoW For Adults. Annoying yet catchy song, CGI vixens doing the Macarena. Nothing close to work safe. I downloaded it because I was curious, but at the 2:46 mark there's -- well, you'll see it. (And it's not even one of the smutty bits, really.) Fall down funny.
  • Amish Paradise. Yes, that "Amish Paradise". Also not exactly work safe.

I think machinima is pretty darn cool -- especially as some of the graphics and physics engines (such as the Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Havok, and the upcoming Oblivion engines) are getting darn close to photorealism and true physics and personality animation. And I would not be at all surprised to see at least some serious indie filmmaking come out of the machinima world in the next couple of years -- heck, for all I know it already has and I've simply missed it.

Better yet, I would not be surprised to see something that is more than a game engine but cheaper and simpler than commercial 3d animation software released commercially that is essentially a machinima studio. Now that would be handy.

Wow. That's pretty amusing.

Oh, and how far have you gotten in Firefly?

Weird Al's "Amish Paradise" was based on Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise", which in turn was based on Steveie Wonder's "Pasttime Paradise". So next time Coolio complains about Weird Al, know that the song wasn't originally Collio's.

I think it's customary to say something about spare time at this point. Still, they are amazing.
