I really shouldn't be getting these right now, but I can't resist: Batman Begins and Land of the Dead. For those interested, the Burton/Schumacher Batman films have been rereleased, apparently with actual special features. And the special editions of Disney's Tarzan and The Emperor's New Groove have been repackaged with a little tweaking and reshuffling of the features -- must-buys if you don't already have the previous special editions, pointless if you do.

Next week: American Gothic.

What's on your must-buy list for the rest of the year?

Update: There are, I think, three different editions of Batman Begins -- a 2-disk special edition, a 1-disk widescreen, and (I presume) a 1-disk pan-n-scan. Also, the Burton/Schumacher films have been released individually as well as the 4-disk set mentioned below, which makes it possible to get them without shelling out all at once, thank goodness.

Update 2: I'm getting back to the music in a few minutes, but I had to throw Batman Begins into the DVD drive and damn what a good movie. Caine, Neeson, Oldman -- and Bale hanging right in there with 'em. Gripping drama, great script.

Those you mentioned, then add

"From The Earth To The Moon" - the new letterboxed addition with added features. I've watched my current p&s edition to death and never tire of it

I think it was you who pointed out the new release of the original King Kong ...

GOTTA have that ...

I may have to buy Batman Begins today, although I can't afford it either.

Right now I need to save every penny I can in anticipation of my new condo. Furnishing even a small place be costly business.

I'm petitioning for the TV show "Action," but that's a reflection of my lewd sense of humour.

Hey. I can think of at least two people who'd sign that petition....

If you don't know about it, go to (and join up at) www.tvshowsondvd.com.

They do seem to have some kind of influence.

I'm told the best part of the eight disc Batman anthology in on the cocmmentary for "Batman & Robin" when Joel Schumacher apologizes for the movie.

On my list:
Looney Toons Golden Collection #3
Harold Lloyd Collection
Scrubs, Season 2
Disney Treasures: The Chronological Donald
MASH, Season 9
Serenity

What the hell's a pan-n-scan? Does it hurt?

Sure might in your case, bud. ;) In case you actually don't know, "fullscreen" is often called "pan-and-scan", which more or less means imposing a 4:3 ratio on a 1.66, 1.85, or even 2.35-to-one "letterbox" screen... and, since this obviously cuts off the action on the sides, the producers would literally pan across the larger picture to take all the action into account. If you've ever seen a nonletterboxed movie on TV -- which you have, many, many, many times -- you've seen this in action, but not necessarily know what it was called.

"Pan-n-scan" and "fullscreen" used to mean the same thing, but I now differentiate between the two, solely because of one movie. When A Bug's Life was released to DVD, it had both widescreen and fullscreen versions in the same package... but, in an amazing coolness, the fullscreen had all of the widescreen elements. It was merely (merely, hah! That must've been a buttload of computer time) recomposited to fit the squarer screen.

Watching the 'Batman' DVD just isn't the same as watching the VHS...I miss that cheesy little Diet Coke commercial. I mean, really, what's more awesome than a Diet Coke in a cape?
