Date: 2005-10-30 10:16 pm (UTC)Don't know how much other folks are aware of this, but I'm quite concerned about the CA special election, as the Catholic Church has started sending homilies for priests to speak about "Protecting Life" in very specific terms, telling people to go out and vote for that parental notification bill. I believe it's lousy law (as so many initiatives are) no matter which way you stand on parental notification laws.
Schwartzenneger hopes the uproar over that will translate to votes on other propositions, even though he's a pro-choice Republican. The right wing is trying to get out the church vote specifrically because they want to stop the union from fundraising. That leads to legislative advocacy often supported by Democratic officer holders, not "just because", but because that's who tends to work on behalf of worker's rights--and they've needed defending a lot, lately. (IMHO, will only need it more, in future.)
Losing that one initiative could have a significant impact on Democratic candidates. Translation, another cheap shot that hurts.
Because of the union fundraising issue, it's going to be taken as a huge advance marker for how things might go at the national level in '06.
