Post-Ory, Pre-Windy
Nov. 9th, 2005 09:50 amOryCon was a blast. Literally, the only thing I would wish different would be a longer concert slot, because we got it goin'. The Whose Line session was fun, if a darn sight more physical than I'm really up to these days, the open sing on Saturday was very good, the Opening Ceremonies were fun (and I got to sing "Crystal Gayle..." and a few more songs for GOHs Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, Rebecca Moesta, and several other great folks), sales were good, the Sunday jam was a lot of fun, everybody was nice, the lovely
ixias made me a wonderful bracelet out of crocheted metal and hematite, I got to hear more of
vixyish and her cohorts in Escape Key....
The hotel's in-room pizza was good. That's how good a con it was. (Pepperoni, huge chunks of fresh-cut pineapple, and, because I asked 'em nicely, minced garlic. The sauce was a little spicier than I normally like it, but not unduly so, and full of flavor, and the crust was great.)
(Along the way, a lovely chorus of singers finally sold me on Kanef's "Six Transit Genitalia Centauri", which I have heard on two occasions previous and which I really didn't know what I thought about [which is why, Kanef, I've never mentioned it, because I honestly didn't know what I'd say]. Both those times, the song was sung solo by... well, I don't want to say a smarmy guy, but both times someone who seemed a little too obviously delighted by the song's cleverness. Yeah. That's a safe way to put it. But those sweet female harmonies [I remember
admnaismith being in there, but his fine voice was not the most prominent for that song] and gentle shtick actually made it work for me and didn't make me feel dirty. So, thank you, ladies, and thank you, Kanef.)
Many, many, many thanks are in order to Cecelia Eng, Andrew Nesbit, Andrew's father, John C. Bunnell, Frank Hayes, Teri Lee, everyone mentioned above, and a whole bunch of other people whose names I'll be sorting out over the next week. You were all aces, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for an excellent time.
The train trip was fun, too. Not being a big fan of either planes or airports lately, I decided to give AmTrak a shot. Except for them not telling me where the frickin' handicapped restroom is until the second day of the trip (and this is important, because I was used to AmTrak's Ann Arbor-Chicago run, which only has large restrooms, and on the Empire Builder from Chicago to Portland they've got airplane-spec johns that I literally hurt myself squeezing into), the trip was relaxing and comfortable and very pleasant, with some particularly gorgeous scenery Friday morning as the train paralleled the Columbia River along the border of Washington and Oregon. Lovely mountains, cute little towns, beautiful.
The only other real problem with the train trip was the high price of food -- the only meal or snack that seemed worth it was breakfast yesterday, which was really good (two fresh-made eggs, good hash browns, good biscuit, milk, juice, peppery sausage patties on the side, nine bucks -- more than a diner, obviously, but not out of line with a good hotel and only a couple bucks more than Bob Evans).
So. Today is a somewhat-rest day, even though I've got a bunch of stuff to do. Tomorrow, I'm off for a house concert in Columbus, and from there Friday I head to WindyCon in Chicago. Should be fun,
billroper and
daisy_knotwise and
janmagic and Nate Bucklin is Filk GOH and
jrittenhouse is Fan GOH and Mark Osier will be there and who knows who all else, and if I actually do get the chance to meet the luminous Erin Gray perhaps I won't humiliate myself too badly with deeply held fanboy worship.
So, how's stuff on your end...?

Date: 2005-11-09 03:45 pm (UTC)Making arrangements to buy white vinyl pants and a white corset for Comicon in July, where I will be representing Emma Frost for a group of X-telepaths (and by which time, I should be roughly a size 6);
Working on the usual insane assortment of projects, including a new romantic comedy that I really didn't need to be writing just now, damn it all;
Planning to cook a turkey this weekend.

As for stuff on my end. Just been busy with real life. Finally clearing the desk a little on personal projects. (Its fun to find out that you have a 8 month backlog of CDs to put away.)

Date: 2005-11-10 06:06 am (UTC)Did anyone happen to record your concert (or will they at Windycon) for a download album?
Since you are making a living at the filk, I figured I might try to keep my adiction happy. :)

Everyone here reports having had a great time as well(and I must remember to add that note about the Marriott pizza to the discussions about next year's hotel).

And spending far too much time doing puzzles and reading livejournal. :)

Date: 2005-11-10 06:06 am (UTC)I didn't write my usual one-song-per-con -- mainly because the idea I had didn't quite gravitate into good form. I did get a c ouple of fragments that might turn into songs, albiet you probably don't want to hear about "JESUS! -- The Book by Anne Rice!" 8^)

Date: 2005-11-10 11:06 am (UTC)Loonatics? Haven't watched it. Could've, but the preview did nothing for me, and I realized after it premiered that I had no interest in seeking it out. I don't watch Looney Tunes for superheroics and neon paint jobs, so why should I watch a third-generation photocopy of Looney Tunes for...?
I've been thinking about Ms. Rice's soppy fanfic myself. Haven't done anything with it yet....
