I like Pandora, though it can get a bit interesting with its choices. I started with Loreena McKennitt, and 15 songs later I was stuck in the 80s with Mike and the Mechanics, Gensis, Tears for Fears, and Phil Collins. But it is still something very interesting to play with. ^_^
"This is interesting. Its kinda odd though because it bases its choices on the music, and not the words/genre/theme/etc. So I started with Ani Difranco and ended up at John Cougar Mellencamp in very short order."
Yeah, been playing with it for a couple of weeks now. I like it, mostly, except for the fact that its repertoire is a bit limited if you only use one seed. I needed to add several artists to my original choice to get a really wide selection that I liked. (Having a limit on the number of times I can skip songs in an hour isn't their fault; apparently it's in the stupid DMCA.)
Thanks for the tip, I'm trying it out now. Unfortunately, it doesn't have Tom Smith, so there goes my #1 pick. And it doesn't have Hedningarna, my #2. But they do have my #3, They Might Be Giants.
Well, I've been through dozens of my faves there, and Pandora didn't have a single indie among them (also didn't have a couple more well known, like Brian Setzer). Wrote them a letter and included a link to your music page.
What we need is a sampler CD for filk. Something filled with many artists (two songs each, you can never judge well with just one) and priced low enough people can grab three or more to give to friends or they can be given out at cons. Then I could buy a few, send them to internet radio stations and ask "Why don't you have music like this?"
I was listening a lot to Laura Powers and Emerald Rose when I first found Pandora, and it has neither of those. Thus my move to Loreena McKennitt. I hope the developers expand the music base as they go along - the idea of a place people could submit ideas for artists/music is a good one. Let's hope it gets implemented.
This is indeed major coolness. It's been helping me catch up on my old Kingston Trio-era artists. The major flaw with this approach, of course, is that it appears to be human intensive, so that you can't just say "throw all of my personal collection into the mix".
If you aren't aware of it, you might also want to check out MusicMagic Mixer (http://www.predixis.com/), which uses fewer features, but derives them all automatically by doing a full acoustic analysis of your entire music collection. I've got an extended (gushing) review (http://gclectic.typepad.com/gclectic/2005/08/my_favorite_sof.html) on my blog.
