I'm less cranky now, thanks. The "house" concert in Dayton went very well, lots of fun, about two dozen people, including Peachcat and poltr1 and a few others I know from cons. Phil came in partway through -- he's not on LJ, didn't know about the concert until almost too late; he lives within walking distance. Sang for about two and a half hours, sold a few CDs, got hugs from adorable kids, good evening.
Now I go home to make cookies.

Date: 2009-12-12 03:07 pm (UTC)Cookies! Cookies are always a bringer of good cheer. :-)
I have a couple of recipes that I posted to my LJ the other day. The brownie cookies are super-easy; the Cereal Killer Cookies are to die for (in a good way).
Brownie Mix Cookies
Things You'll Need:
* Your favorite brownie mix
* 1 egg
* 1 stick of butter
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. Pour the brownie mix into a large mixing bowl.
3. Crack one large egg into the bowl.
4. Add one stick of room temperature butter, which is easier to combine into the brownie mix.
5. Stir with a large wooden spoon.* The dough will be thick.**
6. Place 1-inch balls of the chocolate dough on your cookie sheet. Space each one about three inches apart.
7. Bake for 11 minutes if you prefer soft cookies. Bake an additional minute for crunchier cookies.
8. Remove the cookies from the oven. Allow them to cool for about 10 minutes.
*Forget the spoon. Seriously. You need to use an electric mixer.
**I added a generous amount of chocolate chips and walnuts --*very* stiff dough makes these a challenge to stir in. Dried cherries could be good, too.
I also want to try using a yellow cake mix and adding lots of fresh orange zest and dried cranberries (maybe some slivered almonds) to make orange-cranberry cookies. Or cinammon cookies. Dried cherries and pistachios?
Cereal Killer Cookies
2 1/4 cups old-fashioned oats
2 (6 ounce) packages almond brickle chips
1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
In a small bowl, mix the oats with the brickle chips.
Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt together.
In a food processor (or you can use an electric mixer, really), mix the sugars until blended, then gradually add the butter. Continue to process until creamy and smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla extract and process until blended. Add the flour mixture and process just until combined. Pour this mixture over the oats and brickle chips and stir until well combined.
Using a 2-tablespoon measure, measure out scoops of dough and place at least 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown (I bake for 7 minutes, then switch the cookie sheets if they are on one rack above the other in the oven to prevent burning at top or bottom, then bake 5 mins more. But oven temps/idiosyncracies vary). Let stand about a minute to "set" before removing from sheets (a metal spatula/pancake turner is best). (Do NOT let them sit any longer -- they will cement themselves to the cookie sheet.) They'll be somewhat sticky and fragile at first. Cool on wire racks.

Date: 2009-12-12 06:31 pm (UTC)Peachcat was there? I didn't get a chance to meet her.
Ian and Jen (forgot their LJ handles) were there too, wrangling their kids.
Hopefully I'll be taking my daughter to Central Perc in Oakwood for high tea this afternoon.

Date: 2009-12-12 10:47 pm (UTC)It took me 2 hours. I am DONE with that sort of thing today.
I'm also trying NOT to think about tomorrow. Mostly because it's supposed to be horrible and scary and terrible... but I'm feeling more like "Oh, am I thirty? Meh. Can we go to Dave and Buster's now?"
Am I supposed to be having a nervous breakdown about that?

Date: 2009-12-13 03:12 am (UTC)After work, there will be laundry.
Tomorrow, there will be sleep and Lord of the Rings Online. And maybe watching movies on the new TV via the laptop. VGA input FTW.

Date: 2009-12-13 07:41 am (UTC)Rainy now in San Fran -- but warmer than the 30- we'd been getting that gave us our first actual snow in a very long time. My commuter train looked like a Switzerland Express for a few days.
