I'm less cranky now, thanks. The "house" concert in Dayton went very well, lots of fun, about two dozen people, including Peachcat and poltr1 and a few others I know from cons. Phil came in partway through -- he's not on LJ, didn't know about the concert until almost too late; he lives within walking distance. Sang for about two and a half hours, sold a few CDs, got hugs from adorable kids, good evening.

Now I go home to make cookies.

You?

My birthday is next Wednesday so I'm doing little things to celebrate between now and next weekend. This one restaurant put a free appetizer on my club card which I'm going to take advantage of today and do some shopping. Gotta try to get out of this rut I've fallen in.

I'm so glad your spirits were lifted.

Cookies! Cookies are always a bringer of good cheer. :-)

I have a couple of recipes that I posted to my LJ the other day. The brownie cookies are super-easy; the Cereal Killer Cookies are to die for (in a good way).

Brownie Mix Cookies
Things You'll Need:

* Your favorite brownie mix
* 1 egg
* 1 stick of butter

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. Pour the brownie mix into a large mixing bowl.
3. Crack one large egg into the bowl.
4. Add one stick of room temperature butter, which is easier to combine into the brownie mix.
5. Stir with a large wooden spoon.* The dough will be thick.**
6. Place 1-inch balls of the chocolate dough on your cookie sheet. Space each one about three inches apart.
7. Bake for 11 minutes if you prefer soft cookies. Bake an additional minute for crunchier cookies.
8. Remove the cookies from the oven. Allow them to cool for about 10 minutes.

*Forget the spoon. Seriously. You need to use an electric mixer.

**I added a generous amount of chocolate chips and walnuts --*very* stiff dough makes these a challenge to stir in. Dried cherries could be good, too.

I also want to try using a yellow cake mix and adding lots of fresh orange zest and dried cranberries (maybe some slivered almonds) to make orange-cranberry cookies. Or cinammon cookies. Dried cherries and pistachios?

Cereal Killer Cookies

2 1/4 cups old-fashioned oats
2 (6 ounce) packages almond brickle chips
1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

In a small bowl, mix the oats with the brickle chips.

Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt together.

In a food processor (or you can use an electric mixer, really), mix the sugars until blended, then gradually add the butter. Continue to process until creamy and smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla extract and process until blended. Add the flour mixture and process just until combined. Pour this mixture over the oats and brickle chips and stir until well combined.

Using a 2-tablespoon measure, measure out scoops of dough and place at least 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown (I bake for 7 minutes, then switch the cookie sheets if they are on one rack above the other in the oven to prevent burning at top or bottom, then bake 5 mins more. But oven temps/idiosyncracies vary). Let stand about a minute to "set" before removing from sheets (a metal spatula/pancake turner is best). (Do NOT let them sit any longer -- they will cement themselves to the cookie sheet.) They'll be somewhat sticky and fragile at first. Cool on wire racks.

I'm heading to my signing - although I made cheesecake before I left Dallas. Steve had a piece and seemed to like it.

Oh - and I got to play some new games from Steve Jackson Games :D My life doesn't suck.

Wish I coulda seen the show, though.

Today is cold, but not as bad as yesterday or as wet as tomorrow's to be, so it's grocery shopping, then laundry and transcoding for me all day. Glad to hear the concert went well. Stay warm, and enjoy the cookies.

I need to run out for a haircut and grocery shopping and make something vaguely cookie like for a party tomorrow myself. Odds are though that I won't get to the haircut, will do the grocery shopping after tomorrow's party, and will flake out on the cookies entirely.

Sorry to be the downer in the group. My father, who is 90, went into the hospital on Thursday for a combination of cellulitis, severe anemia and congestive heart failure. When my mother and oldest sister went to see him yesterday, they stopped at a supermarket on the way home. Mom fell and fractured her nose. She's bruised from head to toe, but at 88 years old she's lucky not to have broken a hip. It's been a rough week.

Thank you... If everything goes well, they'll be at home celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary together on the 26th.

My son has been pestering me all week about getting the decorated. We couldn't do it before today because my husband gets home too late from work to make it a fun event in the evenings (less than an hour before our son goes to bed). I'm going to bake banana-choco-chip bread, as well as from-scratch mac'n'cheese, hook up the speakers to my computer and blast holiday music while we cover the tree in ornaments and gewgaws. And for S&Gs, I'm going to have it streaming, live (http://www.ustream.tv/channel/bahr-tree).

I actually have plans! [livejournal.com profile] sithwitch13, who I've known on LJ and IRC for a few years but never met face to face, is in town for a baby shower and we've planned to get together for a bite or something. Next week I have a Section 8 meeting I'm utterly terrified about, but after that, [livejournal.com profile] rehd_fawx, who I have met, is coming down to visit, and she, [livejournal.com profile] doombuggie, and I will have a few days of hookah-smoking, cookery, and cat-cuddling.

Had a great time last night! Thank you!

Peachcat was there? I didn't get a chance to meet her.

Ian and Jen (forgot their LJ handles) were there too, wrangling their kids.

Hopefully I'll be taking my daughter to Central Perc in Oakwood for high tea this afternoon.

Just got back from mailing all the Erfworld orders. (and the Christmas cards)

It took me 2 hours. I am DONE with that sort of thing today.

I'm also trying NOT to think about tomorrow. Mostly because it's supposed to be horrible and scary and terrible... but I'm feeling more like "Oh, am I thirty? Meh. Can we go to Dave and Buster's now?"

Am I supposed to be having a nervous breakdown about that?

So far today, I've had work, half of which I spent decorating for Christmas and re-dressing our life-sized Jack Skellington to be Sandy Claws. Also a migraine, so time off the phones was good.

After work, there will be laundry.

Tomorrow, there will be sleep and Lord of the Rings Online. And maybe watching movies on the new TV via the laptop. VGA input FTW.

My favorite deadly sins for a lazy, rainy December day -- idleness and gluttony. Lounged around my sister's house, knitting an afghan, playing with her laptop and getting fed every half hour. Finally went home with a bag of leftovers.

Rainy now in San Fran -- but warmer than the 30- we'd been getting that gave us our first actual snow in a very long time. My commuter train looked like a Switzerland Express for a few days.
