"I'm exhausted, sore, and bleary after a weekend at Arisia Con in Boston. My apartment is still full of box, and one of my cars needs a couple hours attention to the brakes so it will stop again. And I don't care, because I'm happy as hell right now. Con was great and life is looking up."
Less craptastic than I was expecting. Managed to connect to a website today (which I couldn't all weekend) to get some of my missing data recovered (woot!), and found some old URLs in my email archives to recover even more "lost" data. And am off work for the day, woo hoo!
I came in yesterday to do a voice over for devospice and to do a rough mix for a live show I had recorded for a friends band.
I got the voice over done, I'm thinking about taking a long lunch to work on the rough mix. So that is hanging over me. I need to get that done so I can get back to my projects (the CD that should have been out last summer). Other than that, I'm at work.
I actually had been intending to go over two tracks in detail, with just a tweak here and there on the rest of it. I am instead going over the whole thing in gory detail, and slightly lowering the overall volume level. Karen re-recorded vocals for "Divided Royalties" -- I was happy enough with her earlier version, but there'd been something that wasn't working we were finally able to put into words (too much vibrato in her singing), and the new take is fantastic. I found at least one embarassing mistake, a quiet vocal track where a brief sound effect should be... repeated eight times, damn cut and paste... which would've been my "Paul Is Dead" for this album.
It will be finished in the next couple of days, and it will go to the duplicator, and it'll sound even better than it already does. :D
So far, so good. The sodium hydroxide is only leaking slowly from the Rotofor isoelectric focusing gizmo. As long as it leaks slowly enough, I'm satisfied.
it's a kinda sleepy, cold day. i think i'm trying to hibernate. sadly, i have to be at work at 3 to deal with 45 boxes of books in under 5 hours, but that's not as bad as it could be. all in all, i'm on the upswing from last week's murky, moody depression. still, i have good friends' numbers in my cell phone if i need a pick-me-up. :D gonna try and get in touch with someone from conglom and see what the plan is for this year. if i can work up the energy before i have to leave for work.
Home for MLK-day; keeping an eye on the cats while the air-conditioner swapout gets finished (they did the first part a couple of weeks ago; to day gets drain lines put in, it looks like, and the coolant actually installed.)
Trying to persuade Windows Media Player to burn a few more CD's before it totally craps out on me.
I gotta get more reliable CD software. Recommendations, anyone? And cost IS an object.
I use several programs myself, including the Roxio that came with the drive. The most reliable is CD Architect, but that comes with Sound Forge, which'll set you back a couple hundred. You might try Magic ISO (http://www.magiciso.com/) for $29.95. Nero 7 (http://ww2.nero.com/enu/index.html) is $79.95 but widely regarded.
I've had a very pleasant, low-key weekend out in the Midwest. Tomorrow and Wednesday I get to drive back to the DC area, most likely in *interesting* weather.
Still trying to get over this flu. Still looking for a job (so much for the hope of being employed before the severance pay ran out... two paychecks would have been a great help)
Couple of things happened over the holidays that, well, the husband and I thought sounded like song titles. So we thought we would hand them off to you.
One of the husbands co-workers was asked what he got from his Secret Santa... "Ammo for Christmas".
And while I was taking the bus home from a job interview... "Jesus Got on the Bus". (Really, some guy in long white robes and a shepherds staff. And if the clothes, long hair and beard didn't give it away, he was wearing a necklace that read "Jesus")
How's my day? Well, I just found out that my main assistant for con is NOT going to be at con, and since she was also my roommate, I now need to find a roommate...
Not so great. Mom back in hospital with fractured pelvis and likely to go to nursing home after. Twice-daily run to her house to take care of the little dog until some decisions are made.
On the other hand, I'm starting to get some nibbles regarding possible work.
This was to be my rest day after two weeks of torturing myself on the boot-camp physical regimen. So of course, my ten month-old got the croup and we had to be up all night snorking the gunk out of her nose, and then ruch her to the doctor in the morning. Baby's first antibiotics. She'll be OK, but for the time being is absolutely miserable.
Well, the hubby and I had lunch at Hooter's, so that was a plus. We're getting ready to go out and see Last Holiday, and hopefully that'll be a hoot, too! :)
If anything else goes haywire today, I'ma gonna hafta hurt somebody. This is NOT how I was planning on spending my last day of vacation. *growls* Just for future reference-Computing al fresco is not best done with a desktop computer and a broken window.
It's been good - I've spent it helping murphymom get her apartment to the point where she can actually sleep in her bedroom (she's only been here for six months...). It finally looks like she lives here, and she's happy. And she's gonna have all four of us kids here for dinner tonight, which'll be fun - I don't get to see S'fan or the Sk8ergrrl anywhere near as often as I do n_1_n.
And tomorrow, I train for my next temp gig - box office cashier for Cirque du Soleil. It's the last assignment I plan to ever take from this particular temp agency (which continues to not notice that I have Master-level Microsoft certifications for Office, and keeps sending me on jobs that barely pay more money than Starbucks), but it is (just) more than I'm making on unemployment currently, and considering the client, it sounded fun enough that I was willing to take the pay-cut.
When this gig ends, be sure to tell them why you are no longer working through them. Not your agent, but go to a manager-level person. I'm amazed they haven't sent you to Starbucks yet, personally.
(Yes Tom, we tend to have married-people discussions in other people's journals. We're weird like that. When we get the Other Computer working, Kiri is threatening to start IM chats with me while we are seated four feet from each other.)

They tried to get me to interview with Krispy Kreme, remember?
Rest assured, they will be hearing chapter and verse on why I am no longer a Manpower temporary. I'll send a dead-tree letter to Corporate.

When dafydd and I were still involved, we would (almost literally) be sitting back-to-back in his office, me on the firewall machine, he on his laptop, and sending each other IMs. (Frankly, it's easier to IM a link than having to crane around to look at the nifty thing the other person just found online.)
Dinner wound up being utterly delightful. We went to DiCicco's, a wonderful little Italian place near Mom's apartment with an honest-to-$DEITY Italian waiter and fabulous food...and managed, somehow, not to get kicked out. Considering just how silly we were all being, this was a good trick. (No denying that the four of us are all her kids, though - variations on a particularly warped theme.) I haven't laughed so much in ages...and after Saturday, I needed it.
Work was decent, got to stop and play with my five-month old niece (who can now sit up all on her own!)
Best part of the day was going over the hill into Santa Cruz for a job. This meant I got to listen to KPIG (http://www.kpig.com/) for almost an hour and a half.
Suffering from the creeping yuck. Hot shower and bed.
Oh, soldiergrrrl has finished her tour in Iraq and is back in the US!
Every year on Martin Luther King's birthday, I always make plans to go to the FBI building downtown, take a big stinky dump in one of their toilets, and not flush to pay the Feeble Braindead Idiots back for years of unwarranted spying and dirty tricks played on the good Doctor.
I still haven't gotten around to it.
Someday, I will, though.
But I need to eat something to make it worth the while.
It's my 41st Birthday! My family got the date mixed up with my sister's birthday again and they all forgot to call. It'll be fun picking on them tomorrow.
Close on the condo tomorrow. Yea, for owning instead of renting. Have 16 boxes of books packed. I've been trying so hard to downsize them, too! Got more books than clothes. That's despite hanging around with costumers for a couple of years and having an entire wardrobe box full of clothes from other centuries.
Happy Birthday! [whomp] Happy Birthday! [whomp] Now you've lived another year, Now you know that death is near, They say that cancer's caused by beer, Happy Birthday! [whomp] Happy Birthday! [whomp]
