[livejournal.com profile] unclelumpy reminds us that The Electric Company comes out on DVD next week.

Who was your favorite character(s) on that show? In my case (being admittedly more of a Muppet guy) it was certainly Morgan Freeman as Easy Reader, although I had a thing for Judy Graubart (Jennifer of the Jungle).

Yeah. (sighs dreamily) I mentioned it because my only experience with Electric Company was watching the credits roll while I waited for Square One to start.

The story you are about to see is a fib...

But it's short.

YES, God bless Mathnet. It was one of my childhood goals that I never attained to watch a whole complete week's story of Mathnet. I never made it. :(

I was just giddy to see Spider-Man in a live action form, even though he needed speech lessons.

"Tune in next time when Spidey says 'Waaaugh!!'"

I wonder if he learned that from Sgt. Fury & The Howlin' Commandos.

Oh yes, and Fargo North, Decoder. Who wouldn't love him?

I was very, very young when that was on, but I do remember Spider-Man. And... I think... a muppet called Gary Gnu? Or was that from The Great Space Coaster?

I remember really liking The Electric Company, but looking at that trailer, the logo was definitely familiar, the music was kind of familiar, but other than that, the only thing that made me think "oh yeah! I remember that!" was the Spider-Man comic (not surprising, Spider-Man has been my favorite superhero for as long as I can remember). I think that'll be something to put on the Netflix queue to see if watching episodes jogs my memory.

I really don't remember The Electric Company. I think I was just a little too old when it came out (or at least when I started watching it), because I remember I thought it was really lame, and of course having decided that I avoided watching it. The Tom Lehrer songs make me smile now, but I don't think I heard them then (and I certainly didn't know who Tom Lehrer was then anyway).

I have this vague memory of Rita Moreno yelling, "Heyyyyy, youuuuu GUYYSSSSSSS!" I do not remember anything else but the theme song, which was quite the catchy little ditty. Ah, youth....

I gotta go with Rita Moreno's "HEY YOU GUYYYYYS!" as my favorite Electric Company thing, yeah, with Lehrer's "Silent E" (though I had no idea who Tom Lehrer was then either) coming in right behind. I don't recall his "L-Y" specifically... but that's what CD releases are for. :)

Oh my god.

I never made the connection.

The first time I heard Tom Lehrer as an adult, I remember thinking his voice was familiar, but I never placed it.

THAT'S WHERE I HEARD HIM!

The "L-Y" song stuck in my brain forever. (I... have a thing for adverbs. It's kinda weird.)

Fargo North, Decoder. Definitely. (Even though I too was really too old for the show, technically. Hell with that.)

BTW, Tom, there is a show that very much reminds me of The Electric Company currently on PBS. If you haven't caught Between the Lions, do. Even if just to recommend it to all your friends with toddlers, preschoolers, and even kindergartners.

And also because one day we're all going to do the Smartypants Dance en masse at a con and stun a couple of hundred folks :-)

One of the reasons EC is stronger in many of our minds, and one of the reasons it got dropped, is it was not aimed at preschoolers, toddlers et al. It was aimed at 1-3rd grade. A slightly older slant made it a harder sell. We used to watch in my second grade class though, and we all liked it.
The words were somewhat harder, the humor somewhat more advanced.
So i was still into it in 6th grade when it was cancelled. Nice to hear there were people to old for it on here. Makes me feel young, since you must be at least 55...

Gods...I remember that show...

I grew up watching that show!! That, and 3-2-1 Contact, too...

I think somewhere I have a wav of Rita Moreno doing that yell...and the earliest thing I can remember seeing Morgan Freeman do was Easy Reader. The first time I saw him in a regular movie, I even said "Hey - that's Easy Reader from Electric Company!!"

*adding it to my list of wants...*

I honestly didn't catch the names of most of the players in TEC -- the only names that really stuck in my mind were Irene Cara and Rita Moreno. (Rita as the opera diva in the "Don't Squeeze the Clarmin" sketch...)

I find TEC to be much funnier now that I'm older -- kids didn't understand that the show was as much a satire of American pop culture for adults as it was a vehicle for teaching kids to read.

My favorite Electric Company character? That's a tough one! I don't know who my favorite *is* anymore, but I remember my favorite when I was a kid was that chef after the counting routine, who so often took a tumble and spilled his pastries all over the stairs. I remember I and the other kids my age were just the right age to enjoy seeing that; I think if we'd had VCR's back then we'd've been pestering out folks no end to tape the show and rewind and go through those falls again and again! lol

Rita Moreno in a director's outfit going HEEYYYYYY YOUUUUUUU GUYYYYYYYYYYYS!!

I think partly because I watched West Side Story over and over from very young, and had a thing for her. :)

Also the Spidey comics. Hee.

And OMG THAT TRAILER... it brought back so many things I'd forgotten that I got teary. Oh wow. I MUST HAVE THIS.

I've still got a thing for her. ;) Rita Moreno, Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, Lola Falana, and Teri Garr will always be in my heart.

I also remember Rita Moreno's "Hey you Guys". However I have a different memory associated with it - Sloth's triumphant cry in "The Goonies" :)

However, Easy Reader was always my favorite character :)

Letterman

Definetely Letterman...as favorite character. After that the only really strong memory besides hey you guys (which is inocous to me) is the Tom Lehrer songs and I do remember thinking the spider man bits were awful. This is probably because i actually had the Electric Company Spider Man comics to look back on for years.

Also Rans:
Myra's curtains..and especially
The little guy who would read a sign slowly before an anvil dropped on him or something...Da...dan...Dang...Danger..Oh Danger..blam..
