Peter Benchley Dies

A moment for author and conservationist Peter Benchley, who has passed away at the age of 65. Benchley is, of course, best known for creating, with Steven Spielberg, the summer "event" movie.

Holy cats... I had no idea Benchley was so young, I thought he had to be in his seventies or so by now!

I'm trying to think how many times I saw Jaws in the theater (it only ran for like two and a half years--there's something we'll never see again, outside of Rocky Horror). Three to five at least. And this was well before I was old enough to drive and had to wangle a ride somehow or another. First time I saw it, I was sitting front-left of the (full) theater. During the dive scene on the small boat when that head popped, I landed middle-to-middle-back-left. ;)

Considering how much shark-slaughter his book and that damn movie set off, I'd...question...his credentials as a "conservationist."

Well, that was the thing: He actually did feel pretty badly about that. He had a radio show in which he discussed oceanic issues, and did a lot for raising awareness of sharks as vital parts of the ecosystem.
