Men exaggerate the number of sexual partners they've had.

Sooooooo...

Have you ever deliberately fudged the number of partners you've had, in either direction, to make a good impression with a potential trysting partner? "Yes" or "no" answers will do, and not mentioning it doesn't count as a deliberate fudging of the number unless you didn't mention it in response to a direct question about it (that is, avoiding the question rather than saying, "I don't want to answer that"). In my own case, I don't recall fudging the numbers....

That I recall, anyway. :)

Not with a potential trysting partner, but I do recall fudging with other other fellows when my number was actually 0.

No. I guess I never saw a point in it.

That said, I find myself wondering whether some women fudge the numbers downwards, as well, in an attempt to avoid the appearance of "sluttiness".

For some reason, as far as typical societal values go, it's okay for a man to have screwed a bunch of women, but if a woman does it she's regarded as a "slut". The best statement of this I've found is still attributed to a MAD Magazine parody interview with Rush Limbaugh, in which "he" supports sex ed for males but not for females. "After all, we want women to remain pure and virginal... until we get a chance at them!"

...aaand I'm going to cut that rant off right there. Stupid double standards.

I don't think I've ever deliberately fudged. Though I have occasionally had to go 'Oh.. and so and so'. Usually because I'm often tired or distracted when discussing it.

I use what I call the Dante method. I make a point to be able to recall all of their names in alphabetical order.

If you cannot reconstruct that list and commit it to memory, you've had too many :-)

At times, I was purposely unresponsive about the subject when I was a virgin. Beyond that, no.

The flaw in this method is that you have to have known their names.

...

Okay, maybe I have had too many.

Nope, always been honest when asked. Although, I likely wouldn't respond at all unless the person had a reason to know (that is, potential lover).

I'm not a man but I'll play anyway. If asked directly, I'll answer as honestly as I can. I think I remember most of the people I've had sex with. I've never kept count so I have to go over the different people in my head each time and I'm pretty sure I manage to count them all.

I haven't fudged, to my recollection. At some point I did start telling people that the number of partners I've had was in double digits and leaving it at that.

I've lost count anyway.

Number of lovers

Date: 2006-02-17 08:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] markiv1111.livejournal.com
Never. But I don't think any of the women in my life would have been impressed by a high body count, and it's not the kind of question that anybody has ever asked me. (My suspicion from most of the women I've been close to is that if I'd *understated* the number of lovers, they would have been more impressed. "He's only had a very few, therefore him and me getting together is really special!" But it usually just doesn't come up. I do know one woman who has given two different answers at different times, one of them twice as high as the other, and I do not consider her dishonest -- maybe it *seems* like an awful lot some of the time, but when she stops and counts, it wasn't that many after all.)

Recommended listening, by the way, to anybody who has answered this question, or thought of answering this question: "20 or So," by songwriter Greg Brown, on Red House records. (I don't know which album this is on.)

I was mostly interested in seeing if I was lying to myself about this count. I took a shot at estimating, then at reconstructing my checkered past. I won't use numbers but I overestimated by 38 percent. If you count the "technicals," though, I only overestimated by 12 percent. And it's possible my reconstruction was incomplete, which would shrink those numbers. It probably was.

Interesting article, and exercise.

No, I have never intentionally fudged. I can think of cases where I should have, though.

I'm supposed to keep count? Nobody told me I had to keep a scorecard. Is this for references? Do I have to put a date next to them? What if they've moved and I don't have their current address?

Oh, jeez! I don't think I can make a list.

Is it okay if I just shrug and say, "A lot"?
