Anybody out there giving up anything for Lent? I'm giving up religious self-denial.

If I gave up my day job for 40 days, do you think they'd buy it? I don't want to quit, but I really need a break...

For Lent, I gave up Christianity a number of years ago. Seems to have worked - still not Christian... ;-)

I'm going to attempt not to bite my nails, but I'm not Christian, it just seems a decent time frame. Last year I stopped biting them between Christmas and ConFusion, which was about as arbitrary a time period as "lent" in my world.

I gave up 'giving up things for Lent' for Lent years ago.

(I wanna use my Zorak icon for this, but until I re-up, I'm down to 6 icons, and it's not one of the 6.)

i decided to give up being ill. it's gonna take a few days yet before i really get the hang of it, but if i stick with it it'll guarantee i'll be healthy for my birthday, since that falls on the thursday before easter.

I gave up denial for Lent at birth; I was never taught this as an Episcopalian, and now, since I'm more-or-less Unity, such things are Someone Else's Problem.

I'm the only person in the local SCA who even seems to notice Lent. Which is weird because I'm a Jewish American Pagan... who is actually -interested- in History. Meh.

Chocolate.

I think reminding ourselves that we can choose to deny ourselves a vice/self-destructive activity, at least for 40 days, is a very useful yearly exercise.

I agree with you. And the first day of Lent is always a good time to give up something that's bad for you that you've been indulging in too much, 'cause 40 days just seems very doable. For me this year it's chocolate and potato chips. Lent or not, I just gotta cut back.

A friend of mine always used to give up moderation for Lent.

It's not a bad custom, as these things go. A couple of times I gave up something, didn't miss it, and never picked it up again.

Why do people always give up food for Lent? I don't think it is right you can choose what you want to abstain from, I think the Pope should decide. Hey then you would notice how many catholics really do listen to the Pope! Sorry. I am Catholic so I can poke fun.

My wife on the other hand seems to be giving up a lot of things this year, primarily me. It's ok though, what she doesn't realize is that I'm part of a package deal which includes my paycheck.

I'm giving up loaning stuff for Lent. Seems logical to me. Why do they call it "Lent" if they want you to give it up outright? They should call it "Postpone" or "Throw Away" or something like that.
