Yeah, well, couldn't possibly have gay cowboys win, now, could we? And I presume the person who came up with this poll at Yahoo was having a little fun. Either that, or the world is more screwed up than we thought.
So, who do you think was underappreciated this year? My choices would be John Williams for his score to Memoirs of a Geisha and Grant Major, Dan Hennah, and Simon Bright for the art direction on King Kong.

Date: 2006-03-06 04:00 pm (UTC)Unnecessarily cynical, I think. Hollywood has never shied away from gay themes, Brokeback Mountain did win best director and best adapted screenplay, and Philip Seymour Hoffman did win best actor for Capote. Besides, it could be argued that giving the Oscar to a brutally nasty look at racism in L.A. is the more courageous choice. (I haven't yet seen Crash myself, but my mother did, and hated it. I understand it's not an easy picture to watch.)
And I'd just like to say, for the record, that Jon Stewart was every bit as brilliant as I'd hoped he would be.
"Tragic news: Bjork will not be here tonight. She was trying on her Oscar dress, and Vice President Cheney shot her."

gah. Hollywood. This explains why the rap song won Best Song. Admittedly, with the choice being between Dolly Parton and the wierd song from Crash, there werent a lot of Options to choose from. Sheesh, where was Randy Newman this year?
But yeah, Good Night, Good Luck didnt get enough respect at the oscars this year. Not giving it Original Screenplay at -least- was a crime.

Date: 2006-03-06 06:24 pm (UTC)Maybe, just maybe the reason Crash won out over Brokeback Mountain is because Crash was a better movie. Not saying BM was bad, just saying Crash was better.
That would be a much simpler and more rational explanation than A) Rampant homophobia in Hollywood or B) Because a whole bunch of close-minded idiots prayed to their Invisible Man in the Sky.
And I, for one, am all for increasing the level of rationality in the nation.

Date: 2006-03-06 07:41 pm (UTC)Well, I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain, and I haven't seen Crash, and it's entirely possible so far as I know that Crash is actually a better movie. If it was a 'gay vote' thing, said vote would have been divided between Brokeback Mountain, and Capote--the real, historical Truman Capote having been a Hollywood figure himself of some repute.
And I knew, as I watched the Crash people just go nuts with surprise, that there were going to be suggestions that Brokeback lost because it was "too gay". Hell, for decades, Hollywood was the only place that gays could find acceptance, even if it was off-screen, so I know that wasn't it. This particular gay man says no problemo to last night's final outcome. "Wallace and Gromit" won, so I came away happy.
