There has been a lot of concern in fandom as to how the third X-Men movie is gonna work out. I would say that such concern is fair.

But things like this give me hope.

I'll be there opening weekend.

What do you think, just on the basis of this trailer?

I'm not an Xpurist, but I admit to being just a little worried as to whether or not a storyline this ambitious will be workable in the time available to your modern movies. But the trailer looks great and yeah, I'm -so- there opening weekend...

I think you just nailed what I'd been thinking. It had better be at least two hours, and more like 2-1/2.

I think that having a long movie (2- 2 1/2 hours) has been pretty unremarkable since Titanic and some of the Harry Potters. So no worries there.

I must admit that they are exceeding my expectations (which were rather low) but I'm not letting my guard down. I will go see the movie, though.

And yeah, I'm worried about them cramming the entire Dark Phoenix saga into one movie.

I'm still planning on seeing it, but with each new thing I see, I get less and less excited about it.

The acting should be astounding, considering the actors who played Magneto and Storm were arguing over the central plot of the movie during a press conference. When the actors are seriously into the story, you've got a winner.

What gets me about this is that the X-flicks really have got The Cast From Hell. I mean, think about it: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Kelsey Grammar, Rebecca Romjin, Anna Paquin.... When your fourth-tier hottie is Famke Jannsen, you're doing all right in the casting department.

I think this will be a 'no-drink' movie; take five to go to the bathroom and you miss half the movie! Looks wonderful, and can't wait. I find myself hoping they managed to not mangle storylines too badly, but we are talking about a comic universe that has had the reset button hit how many times? *g*

Bluntly, I could ask 'em to mangle a few storylines. Like anything involving the immensely overrated and, to my mind, completely uninteresting Gambit.

When I was reading comics in the 90s, I liked Gambit. I have heard since then that they have ripped, pulled, spindled, mutilated, distorted, eviscerated, and discombobulated him, his story, his history, and his underwear. I am not surprised that you find him less than stimulating. *g*

I've never liked him. They were trying for a Wolverine-style lightning strike, I think, and... everything about the character annoys me. Every. Thing. Always has. Always will.

I always wondered what would happen if he had tried to charge Wolvie's claws... But I understand. I felt similar to Captain America, but that was due to when I was exposed. Just something about his attitude bugged me.

We just realized that he reminded me about 2nd Edition AD&D Paladins. At least, now so many DMs expected them to be run. Good to a fault.

I don't actually mind that. (And I tend to play Paladins in games. :) The whole point of Steve Rogers is that he was, and is, willing to risk his life to defend America. Unfortunately, there have been periods (and this is one of 'em, particularly in The Ultimates) when the nuances of such a position are lost in the flag-waving. Not unlike real life.

As far as I can tell, the whole point of Gambit is to be Cajun and to throw exploding playing cards. He's not particularly good at either.

I understand his (Cap's) goal and purpose, but still have to fight that first impression. I will admit the live action movie was enjoyable in a campy sort of way.

As far as paladins, I happen to have a paladin/cleric running in a D20 3.x Diablo 2 setting right now. I love it. I was referring more to the 2nd edition version, and the (at least from my experience) notable amount of people that thought you had to endlessly put a paladin in situations where if they did not push the good envelope to or beyond the point of ludicrous then they were failing at being a paladin. I was exposed to more than one situation where a DM set up a paladin so that, to remain faithful to the letter of his faith, he (paladin) would have to do something notably stupid and usually suicidal. (ie. Charge the Adult Red Dragon Cave at 5th Level, and then give forth challenge. Toasty Paladin.) There was also the player that tried to drag the party of 5 4th level PCs into the camp of 150+ Bad Guys, instead of waiting for the support to get into place. No pressing reason, other than EVIL MUST PERISH! (Pushing the envelope versus throwing it over the cliff!) I don't know if it is the system, the players, or (probably) both that has changed, but I am glad it is no longer Fantasy-Paranoia-With-No-Clones.

IIRC, Gambit was introduced with the idea of bringing out his back-story connections in in part of the world. The did touch on that, but then moved away and went into I-Am-A-Tall-Dark-Stranger-With-An-Accent mode. I had hoped they had added some plot since I stopped reading comics, but from what I have heard... *shrug*

I think I will enjoy X3, though...

Squee.

I'm not a fanatic, nor a pusrist, and I couldn't ID half the mutants in that, but it looks enjoyable, and that's a plus, cause I'm not usualy a big action flick type.

I think that this film might actually turn out to be a real epic set in this universe. The first two have been fun, but they've been dominated by the action scenes to the point where the underlying Story (and themes, and character development) are--IMO--obscured. It's hard to tell from the trailer, though...

Juggy and Beast

From: [identity profile] pickledcritter.livejournal.com
Those two bother me. A LOT. I'm not exactly a purist, but even with the makeup I still see a blue Fraiser and not Hank McCoy. I will say the stills of Beast looked good, but when I saw him in motion I wasn't thrilled at all - it didn't look like blue skin, but white skin with blue make-up. Now, I haven't seen Juggy in a while, but this guy ain't him. This is Juggy with Anorexia.

Another problem I have is that I see at least three MAJOR X-men storylines thrown together in one movie - Dark Phoenix, Mutant Massacre, and Legacy Virus...I'm just afraid that's too much too soon

I'm probably gonna have my butt in the seat come May, but I'm gonna be holding my breath the whole time...

Ooooooh! Yep, I was at opening night for the first one, missed it by a day or so for the second one, but if I can be there opening night for this one, I'll do it.

I am not a purist in the slightest, because most of my exposure to the X-Men universe isn't from the comics but from the late 80's/early 90's (?) animated version. So, this pretty much hits everything *I'm* familiar with.

Squee!

This movie will be cool for one simple reason.

EXPLOSIONS.

*Is mauled by the X-fans on here*

All Joking aside, Im actually a lot more confidant than I was before I saw the trailer. There's a lot of storyline to cram in, but they did it with some excellent results in Movie 2. Granted, they werent dealing with the freaking Dark Pheonix, which has been done, redone, fanficced, redrawn, argued over and debated to the point of insanity so many times that trying to include even a tenth of what it needs will take a 6 hour movie - Not to mention including a character with the mutant power equivalent of Alucard from Hellsing....Well, It's gonna be intresting to see how they handle it.

Of course, my first reaction to Teh Prez saying "I cant negotiate with these people" (Scince when did 4 years pass scince the last one? ) made me want to be the subordinate who smacks him and says "Sir, dont be a Noob. They can prawn us majorly."

Ah, that silly american government. I'd find it a lot funnier if the Prez had huge ears and a terrible texas accent.

as it opens the weekend of marcon, i'm hoping to encourage kane to schedule thursday night off so we can catch a midnight showing before grabbing a bit of a nap, then driving up to columbus around 10ish friday morning. especially if the panel about the chosen ones of sci-fi gets to happen. ESPECIALLY if i actually manage to be ON said panel.

Don't want to ruin it

I am of course very excited about the picture. Beast was originally supposed to be in the first one, but the money or time ran out so they made Jean into a doctor in the opening scene. That was supposed to be Hank's big moment. Beast has also always been a favorite of mine, more then the standard Wolverine following. I will only watch the trailer once. I don't want to ruin it. Normally I love trailers but once in awhile I put my head down and cover my ears during them (The last one was Spider-man 2) and this the next one.

I am a semi-purist...I gave up on the xmen comics back in the 90's when onSlaught showed up a few issues after I sold a kidney to get every issue of Age of Apocalypse saga...I didn't even open them when they came...I just put them with the rest still in the bag. I heard later that Onslaught what Chuck's bad side or something. Anyway...I hope the movie rocks, and I wish I could get all of us together in one theater. If you know of a way I will do all I can. I saw the first movie in with a whole audience of non comic geeks and was the lone voice of laughter when Wolvie complains about his uniform and Cyclops asks if he would have preferred yellow spandex. You are my people. Let us gather and celebrate together.

Good Luck, God Bless, and May we never know the level of hate that mutants know in this movie in our reality.

Imagine if you could cure being black both in appearance and behavior? or a Pagan? or a geek?

Last question or comment...I heard there would be Sentinels...Where were the Sentinels?
