Rather Pissed At Firefox
Mar. 8th, 2006 01:36 pmOkay, now I'm getting cranky.
I'm not sure what the hell it is, but neither of my computers can get to TSO, with any program, no matter what I do. Uninstall, reinstall, strip the registries... phuque. All because I took advantage of the new versions of things.
This is exactly why I don't use MS Audo Update. Stupid me, I trusted Firefox... and their various plug-in programmers. And now I can't reach my own goddamn web page. And I know Firefox is part of the cause-and-effect chain because I was, briefly, able to get to TSO on the laptop, and it showed the revision I put up this morning... and then I updated my plug-ins and pfffft.
Anybody got any ideas? I understand I have a web page out there.
Update: Many thanks for all the help. I completely shut down everything, and now I seem to have TSO back at last on both computers. Phew. Now all I've gotta do is frickin' reinstall my plugins....
... and Adblock and Filterset.G both work without keeping me from TSO. Ah-yup, it was a network problem. Again, phew. Thanks, guys.

Date: 2006-03-08 06:45 pm (UTC)Just wondering,
if you click on Start->Run, type 'cmd' and click okay, and then type 'ping tomsmithonline.com' and enter, what sort of result do you get?

Date: 2006-03-08 06:54 pm (UTC)Okay, try 'tracert tomsmithonline.com'
Failing that do a 'ipconfig /flushdns'
I'm thinking that the DNS resolver cache in windows is messed up. This fixed loads of 'cannot get muh innnernet pages' when I worked at Speakeasy.net in support.

Date: 2006-03-08 06:53 pm (UTC)I suspect the problem isn't your computers, but a networking problem. Are both of your computers desktop computers, or are either of them laptop units?
If one is a laptop unit, take it to where you can hook up to a different network. If you still can't hook up, it's probably your computer.
If they're both desktop units, or if there's no easy way for you to hook into a different network, I recommend a similar approach to
tracert tomsmithonline.com
This will give you a view of where the connection isn't happening. I suspect the problem is either your router or some other problem between your two computers and the Internet.

Date: 2006-03-08 06:56 pm (UTC)Disable all your plugins. See if you can get to TSO. If you can, enable your plugins one and a time until you can't. Then you'll know what plugin barfed on your website.
If you still can't get to TSO with all plugins disabled, firefox might not be the problem. You should probably ping and traceroute the path to TSO before futzing with the plugins.
Good luck!

Date: 2006-03-08 06:57 pm (UTC)What happens if you skip the Flash intro and go right to index1.htm -- same thing?
I'm with you on the auto update philosophy. I don't programs going behind my back and updating themselves in stealth mode. I want to know when stuff is updated or even happening.
