No jokes -- just a hope that your weekend is a good one. What's everybody doing? I'm playing Oblivion, doing the laundry at some point, and possibly going out for barbecue (the beast has been awakened by the stuff I had in Memphis).

Well apart from fixing a client's system (and getting a big stinky check from him!) and helping someone move, I'm planning on a bit of grocery shopping, some TV time to veg, and lots and lots of City of Heroes. Tomorrow I am hoping to have one of my rare "Do whatever the hell I want to - screw everyone else who wants to make plans for me" days. :D

I'm having a pancake breakfast with my cohousing community at 11am. I imagine I'm also changing a lot of diapers and nursing my daughter about ten times.

We may go to the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center to check out the bluebonnets and other lovely reasons to live in Texas.

Talking to Mom on the phone (she didn't get the better-paying gig she was up for 'cause the Dean of that school is a lying smoke-blowing asshole), going shopping for a beard trimmer (both my old ones — the main and the spare — have died), and otherwise trying to unlax and rewind.

Just wanted to say how relieved I've been to see a refreshing LACK of April Fool's jokes in your posts. Most of the other entries have been blatant pranks, and the front page of livejournal got into it, too (as ever). I can't go on news sites or message boards without being inundated with this childishness.

So thank you for NOT getting into the spirit.

To answer your question, I'm catching up, cleaning up, have all my windows open, and will probably work on my website a bit. May I have permission to link to your website and blog?

Oddly enough, laundry and Oblivion. Probably some jewelry making somewhere in there.

This "fool" is just going to relax after a wild work week.

Going to a friends house to watch King Kong on the big screen... bringing along some classic Godzilla DVDs... after all if Kong is on then the Big "G" deserves some equal time!

Later who knows I might get out of tunnels of Oblivion!

Hmmm... okay, you've spawned a barbecue monster here too. And I need protein, so what better choice, eh?

This is all your fault, you know... I've been craving Corky's ever since you mentioned Memphis and barbecue in the same sentence.

Thankfully, there's _one_ (count it, one) place in Indy with real honest-to-god barbecue like home. And they're closed on Sundays, so I should go kill the barbecue craving now, before it's too late.

For what it's worth, there are a few Smokey Bones locations in greater Indy. St. Louis style, and not as good as anything we've been discussing thus far, but a solid 8 on a 1-10 scale.

When I moved up here (after mrphl years in Mississippi, where good barbecue is easy to come by), I tried every barbecue place in town in search of something that resonated. I found it at GT South's and now, 10 years later, it still gets my vote for best honest-to-gods Southern-style barbecue in Indianapolis. Several reasonably decent chains have come along during that time, but none can touch GT South's for quality and taste, IMO.

You're going to be here for InConJunction this summer, right?

I propose an excursion for dinner... Wild Mercy will introduce you to the goodness which is GT South's. :-) And if we can't find time to go out, I'll pick up takeout. Yum.

What a way to go!

Barbecue? Yeah, we got it :)

As one of the beast-awakeners who suggested we introduce Tom to the intoxicating flavors of Interstate Barbecue (way better than Corky's is - Corky's has gotten too "corporate" - It's lost something in the last 6 or 7 years) and a native of the aforementioned barbecue Mecca, I do have to say that Smoky Bones' Roasted Habanero hot sauce is the best hot sauce I have ever had.

Oh, and if you really, really gotta have Interstate:

There's an advantage to being both the barbecue capitol of the world AND the world-wide headquarters of FedEx :)

Interstate was way good. I preferred it over Nelly's, although it was a delightfully slim margin of victory, based on the ribs, which were perfect. Nelly's actually had too much meat on them -- you couldn't get ahold of it, it was more like a Ribsickle -- and was a little marbled. Also, Interstate was subtly less tangy (although I loved the flavors of both equally -- they were just different).

I don't know if you ever made the connection, Neely's is actually run by the same family that runs Interstate (The Neely's of Neely's Barbecue are the nephews of Jim Neely, founder of Interstate :) ). However, I also prefer Interstate's sauce to Neely's - they are slightly different forumlations (IIRC, Interstate's uses more tomatoes while Neely's uses more mustard).

Next time you make it, we'll need to take time to run you up to Central BBQ - I put them in-between Neely's and Interstate IMNSHO :)

Yeah, that was the difference between the sauces, now that you mention it. I have finally learned to love some mustards, but still only in small quantities.

I had heard that about Corky's. That's sad... I used to really like their food. I moved to Indy almost 10 years ago (from Vicksburg, MS), and have mostly passed through Memphis on the way to/from visiting my family (northeast MS, near Tupelo) for the last few years, so I've had the occasional sandwich-on-the-run from the Corky's in the airport, but that's been about it.

I may have eaten at the Interstate in Southaven... it's just south of the airport, right? If so, I think it's where I stopped last time I was driving from the airport and realized I desperately wanted BBQ right then. Memphis has that effect on me...

Oh, don't get me wrong, Corky's isn't BAD, it just isn't...the same... as it used to be. You would have to know, though, that I grew up literally 1 block east of the original Corky's - I remember when it started out as a Unocal/Union 76 FULL SERVICE gas station :), then a video arcade/ice cream parlor (all the games you could play on Saturdays between 9am and noon for only $5!!!! :) :)) before becoming Corky's in '84. Once it opened...well, let's just say that I might have been a frequent visitor in the mid and late 80's - to the tune of a pig or three :). I've had several friends and family members come into town and want to hit "the famous Corky's", and I direct them to Interstate instead. They've never been disappointed :).

I think this page: http://www.corkysbbq.com/franchise.htm kinda details what I mean by "too corporate"...it is just too cold and clinical nowadays, and it shows.
