Sony/Sonic Foundry's Acid Pro 6.0 is available at last. If it does everything it says it does, i.e., if it truly is a full music workstation now, I may be able to stop using at least one external program entirely, and stop using another for one of its major cleanup functions.

Oh frickin' yeah. Several changes above and beyond the substantial-yet-not-quite-enough-to-upgrade-for changes in 5.0, the Vegas recording technology now integrated into the Acid tracks, and a gazillion small buffs to the interface and functionality. And the MIDI has been exponentially improved, most notably with envelopes for every MIDI control parameter you might want to program. Ohhh, this looks sweet.

Depends. I'm assuming you're running XP on that laptop. To find out what you think of the basic software, go here (http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/download/freestuff.asp) to get the free Acid Xpress program and some free loops (there's a link right there, and one further down the page for 8-Packs). Try that for awhile -- if you're just doing basic techno, the free program and loops might actually be enough. But, in any case, you'll get a vibe for how the program works. (You might check out this list (http://making-music.blogspot.com/2006/02/list-with-recommended-commercial-music.html) as well -- best bet for price-performance would be FL Studio.) And there are lots of free and low-cost loops on the web -- Peter Prins' acidfanatic.com (http://www.acidfanatic.com/) has a DVD's worth, downloadable, for $25.

If you're running a Mac, then load up Garage Band. Very similar.
