Rev. William Sloane Coffin Dies

The man who inspired Garry Trudeau to create Rev. Scot Sloan, "the fighting priest who can talk to the young", has passed away at the age of 81. Spent his entire life working for civil rights and opposing war. Several eulogies already up at the Daily Kos.

I had the good fortune to meet him in 1981 or thereabouts. He was giving a talk at my college, and of course I went. He hung out for a while afterward, taking additional questions. At one point, he noticed that I--a good Polish kid, of course--was wearing a Solidarnosc button and asked where I'd gotten it, as he didn't have one. He left Wooster wearing mine.

If there were more Christians like him, I might still be religious.

I'm sorry to hear this. Rev. Coffin was a beacon of hope during the 60s.
