Dubya's a wimp.

Update: Crooks and Liars has the video, and Democratic Underground has the transcript.

Who's the idiot who invited Stephen Colbert to be the entertainment at the White House Correspondent's Dinner? *is still laughing*

"When the president decides something on Monday, he still believes it on Wednesday - no matter what happened Tuesday."

So "The Colbert Report" is still irritating and miles and miles behind "The Daily Show," but Stephen Colbert on his own, without the show, is some funny shit.

I disagree. In terms of laughs and well-targeted satire, "The Colbert Report" constantly satisfies me, while "The Daily Show," though still funny, seems to be on kind of a downward slope...oddly enough, since Colbert left. Also, is it me, or have we been seeing a lot less of Ed Helms and Rob Corddry lately? The new correspondents they have are okay, I suppose, but...I dunno, I fear change. Just like republicans!

Seriously, Colbert is brilliant at using his enemies' empty rhetoric as his own greatest weapon against them - he takes something that's already kind of ridiculous when you think about it, then he thinks about it, and takes it just ONE OR TWO STEPS FURTHER to get it to the point where it really makes you think, and it's the White House's own dumb fault for inviting him.

I disagree with you on "The Colbert Report"--The Word is sometimes good for a laugh, but mostly I just find myself irritated by the smarminess that Colbert has decided to use in place of a personality. I know it's a put-on, but even fake smarminess prickles my skin. And I don't think the writing is as good. (Although "The Daily Show" has been hit or miss lately. However, I've been watching it since it started and am willing to forgive temporary slumps; lords know I've done so before. And you're right, the new correspondents are lackluster. But I felt that way about Rob when he was first on the show, so maybe there'll be someone who grows on me. Or they could just give us Ed and Rob back. I fear change too.) I gave "The Colbert Report" a month to impress me, and mostly I was disappointed and annoyed. I still pop in to see how it's doing, or if I can't sleep, but I found my attitude toward it extended even to the commercials.

Then again, I find Fox News fills me up with my daily dose of smarminess and self-righteousness for the day, and I can actually hate those bastards for it.

However, I DO agree with you that Colbert is brilliant. That was one of the reasons I wanted to give his show a chance, because I think the guy is amazing. I wonder how much trouble the guy who booked him got into the next day.

Maybe some subversive merry prankster got their hands on the official list of speakers and added Colbert? That would be a fun idea, but more probably someone in the white house without a sense of humor (and there are many) caught a glimpse of "The Colbert Report" and thought Cobert really did support the president ;-)
