Lotsa good stuff this year.

So, who's collecting what? I admit that I'm not buying a single title right now, although some of the stuff I've seen in [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily has got me thinking about getting Batman again.

Daredevil's still keeping me interested, despite the departure of Bendis and recent thoroughly-unnecessary developments regarding a certain supporting character. Peter David's new X-Factor book is VERY good - better than anything he's written in years. Green Arrow's "one year later" developments are intriguing (the whole "one year later" thing is, actually...I'm considering re-checking-out Batman myself to see what they've done with the character.) The New Avengers is still confusing, and The Hulk's in space again.

The Spider-Man books are starting to flounder again, which is depressing given how GOOD they've gotten in recent years. Marvel made huge steps forward across the board in putting storytelling over "ohmygawd permanent continuity changes you gotta buy this," but now they seem to be regressing...we've got new powers, a new dumbass costume which basically turns Peter into Iron Man, and the writers have spent startlingly little time explaining what these new powers ARE, let alone how Peter and family are dealing with them. Maybe it's because they've got so many multi-book crossover plot points to fit in...

Very different book, though. He's going for sort of a detective story feel, spawned from the excellent Maddox miniseries.

Well, there was a mystery running throughout the early issues of his last run, too...
...WHO taught Larry Stroman anatomy?

Batman's doing a crossover...that's limited to Batman and Detective. No, really! It's aaaaawesome.
Supes is doing the same (8 parts over 2 titles) with Superman and Action. It's not as good as the Bats one, so far, but it's great (by post-Byrne Superman standards.)

You may want to consider getting a couple of the Bat-titles. It's... they actually have made changes, and good ones.

Up til the change in creative teams, I was completely avoiding Robin, for instance, but the new team seems to get what Robin's about, as least from my perspective.

Birds of Prey has been consistently interesting for me.

Nightwing at this point I'm not completely sold on it yet. The new plot line running through it seems interesting, but I've been tricked before.

The core Batbooks do also seem to have gotten themselves into an interesting shape, so I've been following those, and also, as a result of some of the stuff that's been dropped online, I'm also starting up on Catwoman.

Although I'm primarily a Superman fanboy, the Superman One Year Later stuff has only been marginally interesting for me thus far, but their first crossover story arc thing is still ongoing, so it may yet get good.

I'm giving Teen Titans a chance, although Johns was already slowly losing my interest.

Over on Marvel, I mostly just keep track of Spidey, Iron Man, New Avengers, Young Avengers, Exiles, Runaways and Nextwave.

Less mainstream stuff, I keep track of Y, The Last Man, Invincible, Planetary (which is a most awesome read) and a few other things here and there.

Those're my personal recommendations, but it also depends on what you're really looking for.

Exiles interests me because of the New Universe crossover stuff, which I've been meaning to pick up in back issues. Is good yes?

The quality tends to vary. The current storyline's been interesting, but I'd really love for them to get back to their original business of fixing things that went wrong.

I still enjoy reading certain titles like JSA, Teen Titans, and Legion but I have stopped buying as many books as I used to because of the price.

Planetary is about to end, so that's another book off my list.

Other titles:
Jonah Hex
NextWave
Uncle Scrooge (at least for the Barks and Rosa stories)

I recently bought the Essential Godzilla edition. Fun stuff from the 70's.

I'll be at CAPE2 at Zeus Comics (Guests: Bryan Hitch, Gail Simone) on Saturday promoting FenCon, so if anyone reading is in the DFW area, please stop by.

Fables and Girl Genius. I was always about the obscure ones.

Exactly. I'm also gonna get the just-finished Matt Wagner Batman mini, when it comes out, 'cause it's Matt Wagner. :)

So do I, usually, although I'm making an exception for issues 48-50 of Fables.

Mowgli finding Bigby (48-49) and the reconciliation with Snow (50, a double issue.) Fangirl that I am, I could wait to get the compilation to find out who the Adversary was, but not wait for Bigby!

Oh, and I should have mentioned in the original post - the other comic I get in compilations is Dork Tower. How could I forget that?

:: tsks :: How could you forget! :p

But, yes, I can understand why you'd be wanting to get those issues as soon as possible. I've been curious as to where Bigby's been all this time.

I really don't read comics much anymore. Occassionally, I'll pick up a title that has a known limited run or something collected into graphic novels that is a "can't be missed" recommendation from friends. Marvel's MAX series Supreme Power from JMS for instance, or WildStorm's The Authority. Titles that aren't infinitely episodic, with plotlines reaching more for examinations of the archetype rather than delving into them as much for profit potential as artistic merit, are what really draw me in now. I blame it all on Bill Willingham's Elementals and of course Moore and Gibbons' The Watchmen for turning my head away from the "classics."

Girl Genius
Wonder Woman
P S 238
She Hulk
Fables
Doc Frankenstein

Artists can pull me in, which means I'll probably be buying another Batman comic soon.

Interesting. We have almost complete overlap, except I'd substitute Catwoman and Birds of Prey for the last two...

A couple of shops that I'm aware of are doing it.

Traitor that I am, I'm off to a ferret show for the sole purpose of shopping.

I'm reading the new ElfQuest miniseries. It's decent so far, although I haven't fallen for it the way I did the original series.
