Hey, if Pixar could make desk-lamps into sympathetic characters ...

Seriously, I think they have proven — several times over — that they can use just about any object to embody characters. But every puppeteer for centuries has known the principle.

I'm sorry; but I'll have to side with the "Aw Man ..." crowd. From the trailer, the story sounds highly unoriginal; but I suppose this is to be a tour-de-force of the current state of CG animation.

Car may be Pixar's version of Lucas' Star Wars prequels. Maybe not that bad; but pul-eee-uzzz. How about an original theme? And I can almost guess the plot.

It'll be fun, funny, and full of visual easter eggs that you'll need the DVD to frame-by-frame to find.

I'll watch it!

I liked this the first time I saw it....when it was called

One Cab's Family (dir. Tex Avery; MGM, 1952)

An old cab and his wife have a baby boy car in hopes that he'll grow up and be a cab like his old man. But being young, the little car wants to be a hot rod instead. The little car races around against his father's wishes until he gets into trouble racing a train. His life barely saved by his dad but it is not without consequences. His dad gets put in the mechanic hospital. While he is making his recovery, the son shows his dad that he wants to be a cab just like his dad. The only thing is that he keeps all his racing mods.

Thank you. That's the cartoon I've been trying to remember since I heard about Cars.

Aw come on. You have seen Tex Avery cartoons. "Little Hot Riding Hood" with the sexxxxy Redhead and the Big Bad Wolf in the nightclub, having cartoon whole-body erections and howling. Some radical early Bugs Bunny. He originated a lot of the really surreal action imagery that we associate with GOOD cartoons. He was emulated heavily in WB's Tiny Toons [which was much funnier than it sounds] and "The Mask" feature film.

Actually, I meant Larry The Cable Guy, but thanks for the information. :) I do tend to confuse Chuck Avery and Tex Jones...

Tee hee. Sorry, Mr. Zander. Well, Larry The Cable Guy is one of the four standup comics in the "Redneck Comedy Tour". Kind of crude but very funny if you like that style.

Evidently, ol' Larry voices a Tow Truck in "Cars", which seems to me quite apt casting. He's also got his own movie coming out but that looks to be just too much of one joke, really. My opinion, your mileage may vary, etc.

Agreed about the Tex Avery cartoon. Also, we're not seeing any visuals in the trailers that we haven't seen before in the Arco ad campaigns with the talking cars. Sigh.

Cars is starting to look more interesting. BUT, like you led with, Its Pixar and if Pixar knows anything its that "Its All About The Story". They've yet to release a film that failed to tell a good story so I'll give them the shadow of the doubt and I'll see "Cars".

This trailing FINALLY gives some insight into the story.

Indeed. My only hesitation at this point is Owen Wilson, who I still consider a talentless mop.

Oh, I DO know about this one... I know there's no way in HELL I'm gonna see it!

You honestly believe I'm going to see a movie that in any way, shape or form glorifies NASCAR?

NASCAR is for people who weren't high-class enough to be accepted into the PRO-WRESTLING crowd!
You know, the "30 Percenters"?

Who cares if NASCAR is involved? If the story is good, it's a good story. A couple of good examples are the anime series "Hikaru No Go" and "Princess Tutu." One is about the game Go, which bores me and many others to tears after the first few moves, and the other concerns ballet, yet both stories intrigued and captivated a number of people I've shown them to.

All I care about is if it's a good story, well written and well presented, the plot details are secondary.

Pixar is taking chances, it's almost like they want a failure just to get it over with. They took a gamble on "The Incredibles," fully realizing it could bomb, now they're trying to take a tired old story and seeing if they can still make it interesting. I remember a painter dude I knew at college. He was _very_ good, but one year he kept going more and more extreme with his style, and seemed to get a bit more grumpier every time his latest effort received a lot of praise. After two paintings finally got a lot of polite "not as good as your earlier work" and a few "Eeeewwww"s from his classmates, he eventually relaxed and drifted back to what he did best.

I get the same impression from Pixar these days.

Sorry. I've loved everything Pixar's given us so far, but...I just don't know about this one. For one thing, and I never thought I'd say this, but I'm just kinda sick of Owen Wilson. For another...I dunno. Toy Story (both 1 and 2) sent chills down my spine. A Bug's Life was great. Monsters, Inc. looked awesome from trailer number one, and so did The Incredibles. All of these were great movies with compelling characters and plots and you could SEE that straightaway.

This one...maybe it's the CG glut. Maybe I really am expecting Pixar to turn out a stinker sooner rather than later. Maybe it's the crazy Owen Wilson thing. But I don't feel that thrill of anticipation. I don't hear that voice in the back of my mind screaming "It's PIXAR, holy crap this is gonna ROCK!"

Meh.

And I agree with palenoue, actually -- I know I really can't stand my own 'hot streaks,' because the better people think you are and the higher they build you up, the longer and harder your fall. I'd much rather screw up now and then and keep people thinking I'm human. I don't respond well to any kind of pressure.

The characters look about as one-dimensional as it gets. That's really not making me very happy. And in particular, the woman character just makes me gag. It's like, her entire personality is "Hey, look, it's The Woman! The entire motivation for everything the Male Main Character does!" Then there's the silly car, the strongarm car, etc, etc, etc. The liberal in me just isn't too happy about the staleness of these characters and their concrete gender roles.

Pixar better pull something outta the hat, that's all I've got to say.
