I haven't posted anything about the NSA phone record scandal, mostly because [a] I've had a busy day and [b] it's updating way too fast for any one source to keep track of it; check all your standard blogs. But, in case you don't regularly check the invaluable Crooks and Liars, I thought you'd like to see this clip of Jack Cafferty on CNN's Situation Room earlier this afternoon. Sums things up nicely.

I suspect some of my more neoconservative readers will offer some defense of this. There is none. America itself is being threatened by this -- everything about our country that we cherish. If you believe otherwise, you're on the wrong damn side.

Nothing Bush does surprises me anymore. Neither does his standard respose of "Yeah? So? We have to get the terr'ists."

It pisses me off. But it doesn't surprise me.

My problem with calling my Congresscritter about this (aside from the obvious jokes) is my complete lack of ability to figure out just where to start.

I think we should be allowed to sell Washington, DC back to the British and name New York the new national capitol.
That way, when people misbehave while in office, we can simply take them on a scenic tour of Staten Island...including its spacious and charming landfills.
I'll drive.

Not in Staten Island, unless you want to keep them around for a long time.

Parts of them, maybe...but I'm sure we can find some nice canopic jars in the Village.

but there are security procedures for oversight, too. (Basically, it comes down to "if the legally responsible overseer has no staff with the proper clearance, you GET them the proper clearance, enough to say that even though this stuff has nothing to do with what you're looking for, you might see it and won't ever repeat it, right?")

I was once involved in a court martial hearing where the defendent tried to use that as a rape defense. It is no less BS here.

Did you get the feeling that Wolf was not happy about what Cafferty said ???

I just got that vibe somehow

Wolf is a shill. He's a tool. He's one of the members of the media who are In On It. This is not a conspiracy theory; this is readily documented, day in and day out, by the blogs such as C&L, Media Matters, etc., etc., and occasionally even the Corpulent Media themselves, who note the vast and constant disconnect between what these fuckers say and how they say it, and reality. Go to C&L and check out the Daily Show clip on Ray McGovern from the other night. You'll see it in action. Multiply by six networks and the past five and a half years.

I haven't commented to you a whole lot since we finally friended each other because politics simply are not (should that be "is not"?) the thing I got onto LiveJournal to do. But every so often something comes along that gets me so angry and frightened that I would be lying to myself if I didn't say *something.* Mr. Bush is turning this country into an America that is not the America I know and love. It is the stuff of nightmares, and the more people are aware of this reality, the better. Yes, and mobilize yourself, friends, neighbors, and relatives (I have a stepson who is old enough to vote) so that the 2006 elections make a difference.

Exactly, m'friend. I don't consider any of them to actually be American. They have no disregard for the welfare of the country or its people; they violate their oaths to uphold the constitution pretty much every day in multiple ways. All they care about is their own money/power structure. They don't want to bring back the days of robber barons; they want to bring back the days of feudal lords and serfs.

The really insane part is that they do such a bad job of it.'
I don't think they're doing very well, if Halliburton gets such a crummy rating from WAll Street itself.
What makes me say so many nasty words about that lot (and their whores with 'em) is not so much that they're robber barons.
They're incompetent robber barons.
A good 'un wouldn't kill the sheep just trying to get 'em in the pen, let alone get the clippers to 'em.
A good robber baron would just get the shearing done without a lot of fuss.
These boys--they're insane, and only getting worse.

Hell, if they weren't American, this wouldn't be making me nearly so angry.

Treachery is far more despicable than warfare.

From: [identity profile] markiv1111.livejournal.com
I said "Mr. Bush" up above. The stuff the NSA is doing is ultimately on Mr. Bush's watch during his administration, and I consider him culpable. The certainty that there are a whole lot of people who want to think of themselves as good citizens and yet are doing this stuff and/or supporting this stuff doesn't make it any less Mr. Bush's responsibility. (And what would such justices as, for instance, Samuel Alito do if the legality of this nonsense were to wind up in front of the Supreme Court?)

As I've said before... Terrorists cannot destroy the Constitution. They could hijack a 757 and fly it into National Archives and destroy the document itself, and it would not destroy the Constitution. They need help from the inside to do that.

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and company are destroying the Constitution. The opportunity to save American democracy and freedom may have been lost in the 2004 elections, or it may remain. But certainly, hope dims every day.
