230 years ago today, a group of colonists who really didn't want to separate from their mother country signed a declaration of their intent to do precisely that.

That day, and that document, changed the world.

Now, America's freedom is under attack from within. But there's still so much to love about this country. And we can still take it back. Heck, we've even got our own King George.

Happy Fourth of July, gang.

To pick a some historical nits:

Independence was actually declared on July 2, 1776 (the Lee Resolution).

The text of the Declaration of Independence was indeed adopted on July 4, 1776.

The copy in the National Archives with John Hancock's big ol' signature (the "engrossed copy") was actually signed on August 2, 1776.

But leaving such minutiae aside, happy Independence Day to all. Remember what it means.

56 men would sign this legendary document. It was one which it was just as likely to become their Death Warrant as it was their independance. It was the ultimate act of mutiny and treason against the British crown. They knew, one and all, the risks they took - For these were men of knowledge and education. Many of them were rich.

They had security in plenty. They chose Freedom.

A lesson that needs to be learned, again.

Happy Fourth, folks.

In July of 1776, we declared our independence from tyranny.

In November of 2004, we declared our devotion to it.

Happy 4th . . .

Speaking of internal attack . . .

In rejecting some of the key claims made in a class-action lawsuit brought against the U.S. government by Muslim immigrants detained after Sept. 11, a federal judge yesterday ruled that immigration law gives the U.S. broad powers to detain noncitizens indefinitely on the basis of religion, race, or nationality.
