Sigh.

I was really cranky with the last post. So, in an attempt to have a better attitude about it all, here is your horoscope for today.

But It's good to see that you can still laugh and find humor.

"Now you may find it inconceivable or at the very least a bit unlikely that the relative position of the planets and the stars could have a special deep
significance or meaning that exclusively applies to only you, but let me give
you my assurance that these forecasts and predictions are all based on solid,
scientific, documented evidence, so you would have to be some kind of moron not to realize that every single one of them is absolutely true."

I love that song.

Just remember that those twits no more speak for most christians than the Flat Earth Society speaks for most scientists or the RIAA speaks for most musicians. They are serving their organization's goals only. End times, pooh. If they practiced what they preached then they'd read the line that says "you will not know the day, you will not know the hour." So anyone who claims they know it is the end of days is - by the scriptures - wrong.

The only one who gets to put words in my mouth is my wife, and that's because of a long-standing agreement involving food, money, living arrangements and other such benefits. Heheheh.

According to Weird Al, I should just lie face down in the mud all day.

What song is he parodying here?

None. It's one of his originals, and one of my favorites of his.

I actually like his originals much better than his parodies. He really does have a gift for melody and arrangements (and a virtuoso musician) when he cares to excercise those talents.

I always think of "Frank's 2000 Inch TV," for example. It's a dead-on REM pastiche, of course, but leave aside the silly lyric, and it's really quite lovely in it's own right.

Incidentally, Al's new album, "Straight Outta Lynwood," is coming out in late September...

Does anyone else have a lot of problems running flash videos on Firefox? They tend to load and then freeze, forcing me to fire up Exploiter to see them. Advice?

Actually, no, I've got no problems running .swf files in Firefox. Have you updated the plug-in? Otherwise, try Opera, or perhaps installing the Shockwave player.

Gee, I didn't think that post about Pinky and the Brain was cranky at all. Huh? (Goes and notices post after that...)
Yeesh. I'd better go and comment on that cranky post now!
(Oh, and thanks for the link. Great song. Excellent video! And it reminds me that I need to get my Looney Tunes DVD sets to my friend so he can create an Operation Desert Storm vid for you!)

Hey I thought you might like to see this (http://www.piratesandemperors.com/). It's sort of in the flavor of School House Rock.

They're usually so general that they can apply to almost any event. I remember hearing that some schoolchildren kept horoscope diaries. They determined that they only remembered the ones that applied, not the complete misses. Not really scientific, but thought provoking.

I acutally have had Running With Scissors in my car's CD player for the last week or so :)

"Horoscope" makes my top 3 favorite of his orginals, but if I really, really had to pick a single favorite original, it would have to go to "The Night Santa Went Crazy (Extra Gory Version)", although "Everything You Know Is Wrong" gets mucho style points for working in the phrases "hibachi dealer" and "the floating disembodied head of Colonel Sanders" :)

Although the more I listen to it "Party at the Leper Colony" is so punningly stunning I think it has to go up on that list as well - I have yet to find another song that *simultaneously* induces a massive "bad pun groan" AND a "that's quite disturbing and gross" shudder.

I've always had great love for "One More Minute" and "Dog Eat Dog", and I would love to see a video of "Frank's 2,000 Inch TV" starring Frank Conniff.

Hee hee hee - I love that idea! :)

Parts of "One More Minute" came too close to some of the stuff I had to do in boot camp :)

Since I've been a cubicle rat for the better part of the last decade, "Dog Eat Dog" does have some resonance :)

I just think it's sad that since he's just thought of by mainstream as "that parody guy", no one realizes what a frickin' musical genius he is, or just how good Steve, Bermuda, Ruben and Jim are - I mean, I'd like to see White Stripes try to play a bluegrass song and sound perfectly authentic :)

That's one of the most important parts of parody, and they are indeed great at it. As [livejournal.com profile] min0taur has said, if you're riffing on "Stairway To Heaven", you are obligated to make it sound as much like "Stairway To Heaven" as possible so people get the joke. That's why I try not to parody too many obscure songs -- Parody 101 is, "The more people who know the source material, the better".
