Last year I had an excellent time at ConFluence, north of Pittsburgh. I was considering it again this year, but they were so full up with talent I figured I'd get lost: Lawrence Dean (in his first appearance outside the UK), Rob Balder ([livejournal.com profile] partiallyclips), Jonathan Coulton, Fianna, Sue Gartland, Pete Grubbs, Tom Jeffers, Erica Neely ([livejournal.com profile] catalana), Ookla the Mok, Sass!, Steve Simmons ([livejournal.com profile] scs11), Sudden Death ([livejournal.com profile] devospice), and Worm Quartet ([livejournal.com profile] wormquartet), and with American Sign Language "performance translation" by Judi Miller. So, if you're out that way, you could do way worse than dropping by.

I am trying to coerce my damn tickly throat (still, after weeks of this noise) to get through some songs. What's your weekend lookin' like?

She is indeed. I love her dearly, and I cannot watch her while she's signing my stuff or I'd just fold up and twitch in helpless laughter. She's a goddess, with some of the best comedy timing ever.

My weekend? Trying to get the last 4000 words of Julnawrimo finished so that I can have a whole novel and maybe a short story.

I get them published and they're more things to sign at cons...

(Oh, and BTW: Angel Sparrow here, from Mid South Con. I'm on the shirt)

Sorry to hear about your throat. :-(

Me, I've just bought my first motorcycle and will be learning how to ride (again) this weekend and in the coming weeks. (I've ridden bikes before but never was *ahem* "approved" to be riding them.)

In addition to that I have audio to edit for a podcast segment that's way late. I also am going to need to fix the transom on my boat this weekend.

Then there's the antique bookcase my mother is giving me that I need to move into our home. (I've already made a space for it.)

And in addition to all of that I need to spend time with the family and suck down more filk and videos off the net. ^_^

And if I have any time left I will be trying to install my IBM scanner on my iMac and scan some of my books and comic books. (Hi, my name is [livejournal.com profile] nimitzbrood and I'm a [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily addict...)

On a side note - Happy Sysadmin Day (http://www.sysadminday.com/)!

Love love love [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily and [livejournal.com profile] fullscans_daily. Bluntly, they let me keep up with the mainstream comics in such a way that I don't have to feel like an ass for actually giving Marvel and DC money for the crap they've been putting out for the past several years. (Although at some point I will get all of the Fables collections. Those are amazing. But that's not the same kinda stuff, is it...?)

Any comic you think is worth paying for is in my opinions a good comic. I'm sure I own some stuff that people would just sneer at. (This for instance. (http://shorterlink.org/922))

One thing I've been harping about lately is the fact that people will spend big bucks for a "new" book/comic when Amazon usually has a "used" one for about a quarter of the price. Sometimes I understand that (my recent accumulation of Harry Dresden (http://shorterlink.org/921) novels for instance) but most of the time if I'm just collecting a series to read it I buy used off of Amazon and then hand them off to other people. Comics seem to be no exception (http://shorterlink.org/920) to this rule.

That and you can pick up some of the most amazing comics through local recycling places. It's often a wonder what people throw out.

And yes I fully intend to post some crack to [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily. ;-)

I don't sneer at TDNSA, but I do wish that Frank Miller (and, for that matter, John Byrne) would get beta readers. I'm sure they have contracts that outline how their stuff won't be touched by editors or something, but Kee-Ryste TDNSA was ugly.

On my own sneerworthy shelf, I rather liked a lot of the mystical stuff JMS did on Amazing Spider-Man a couple of years ago. And my only wish for JLA/Avengers was that it had gone six issues instead of four, so that George Perez could've had more room for that fantastic art.

I'll second that. The story wasn't bad but the art was horriffic! :-(

Though I will admit that there are two scenes I find really classic - the first is the scene with The Flash and Batman drinking tea/coffee after being freed from Lex Luthor. The other, of course, is the interaction between Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel near the end.

On my own sneerworthy shelf, I rather liked a lot of the mystical stuff JMS did on Amazing Spider-Man a couple of years ago.

Aroo? I'll have to dig through and find that one! Can you get me an issue number when it's handy?

I had to stop collecting comics in the late 80's/early 90's due to having to pay my parent's mortgage at the time. (Dad was out of work.) That set me back several years and I'm just now starting to collect things again. My wife works for Follett Library Services, they sell books to libraries and schools, so I'm lucky enough to get a good dose of independent comics when they have their huge annual book sale for $.25/each. I pick up an amazing amount of Dark Horse stuff and manga there usually.

Man I'm so way behind in everything...

No cons for me, I'm saving up for WorldCon in just about a month. Damn, I miss filking. Maybe I'll spend quality time in the singing -- There is no Con-Chord here this year, the local consensus was to fold it into the LACon filk room extravaganza. Maybe I'll bring ALL my percussion instruments, from bones to djembe, and throw my own Drum Jam.

This weekend, meanwhile... I will be making a Spongebob cake for my friend's 8-year-old's birthday. Maybe a Super Spongebob since he's a Superman fan too. Get'em started early, that's what I say! He's at that very cute age that we will miss the most when puberty hits and he gets grumpy.

I'm loving those two groups as well. You'd think that would obviate having to go out and buy comics when I could read them online, but I find I'm going out and buying more not less. The Bizarro collections, for example. There's comedy and a little serious Gold in there!

[contritely] I need to get my scanner working and give something back.

So are you saying that you might videotape some concerts at Confluence? I would absolutely KILL for a video of Coulton's concert, especially the audience reactions... This will be (I think) his first exposure to con crowds, and possibly their first exposure to him. I really wish I could be there.

Aside from a couple hours of paying work in the morning, Pickles and I are going to be seeing Dennis DeYoung in concert w/the Memphis Symphony Orchestra at the Memphis Botanical Gardens - a really gorgeous venue, and we're going to be taking picnic dinner and everything (considering just a small Caesar salad from their chosen caterer is $25 (yes twenty-five dollars!), I think picnic is the only way to go :) ).

That and a MidSouthCon subcommittee meeting is all I have planned for this weekend ('tho there is the chance we may catch My Super Ex-Girlfriend at some point)
