ConFluence... And I'm NOT There
Jul. 28th, 2006 07:15 amLast year I had an excellent time at ConFluence, north of Pittsburgh. I was considering it again this year, but they were so full up with talent I figured I'd get lost: Lawrence Dean (in his first appearance outside the UK), Rob Balder (
partiallyclips), Jonathan Coulton, Fianna, Sue Gartland, Pete Grubbs, Tom Jeffers, Erica Neely (
catalana), Ookla the Mok, Sass!, Steve Simmons (
scs11), Sudden Death (
devospice), and Worm Quartet (
wormquartet), and with American Sign Language "performance translation" by Judi Miller. So, if you're out that way, you could do way worse than dropping by.
I am trying to coerce my damn tickly throat (still, after weeks of this noise) to get through some songs. What's your weekend lookin' like?

So are you saying that you might videotape some concerts at Confluence? I would absolutely KILL for a video of Coulton's concert, especially the audience reactions... This will be (I think) his first exposure to con crowds, and possibly their first exposure to him. I really wish I could be there.

Date: 2006-07-28 12:51 pm (UTC)Me, I've just bought my first motorcycle and will be learning how to ride (again) this weekend and in the coming weeks. (I've ridden bikes before but never was *ahem* "approved" to be riding them.)
In addition to that I have audio to edit for a podcast segment that's way late. I also am going to need to fix the transom on my boat this weekend.
Then there's the antique bookcase my mother is giving me that I need to move into our home. (I've already made a space for it.)
And in addition to all of that I need to spend time with the family and suck down more filk and videos off the net. ^_^
And if I have any time left I will be trying to install my IBM scanner on my iMac and scan some of my books and comic books. (Hi, my name is
On a side note - Happy Sysadmin Day (http://www.sysadminday.com/)!

Date: 2006-07-28 01:11 pm (UTC)One thing I've been harping about lately is the fact that people will spend big bucks for a "new" book/comic when Amazon usually has a "used" one for about a quarter of the price. Sometimes I understand that (my recent accumulation of Harry Dresden (http://shorterlink.org/921) novels for instance) but most of the time if I'm just collecting a series to read it I buy used off of Amazon and then hand them off to other people. Comics seem to be no exception (http://shorterlink.org/920) to this rule.
That and you can pick up some of the most amazing comics through local recycling places. It's often a wonder what people throw out.
And yes I fully intend to post some crack to

Date: 2006-07-28 01:18 pm (UTC)On my own sneerworthy shelf, I rather liked a lot of the mystical stuff JMS did on Amazing Spider-Man a couple of years ago. And my only wish for JLA/Avengers was that it had gone six issues instead of four, so that George Perez could've had more room for that fantastic art.

Date: 2006-07-28 01:32 pm (UTC)I'll second that. The story wasn't bad but the art was horriffic! :-(
Though I will admit that there are two scenes I find really classic - the first is the scene with The Flash and Batman drinking tea/coffee after being freed from Lex Luthor. The other, of course, is the interaction between Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel near the end.

Aroo? I'll have to dig through and find that one! Can you get me an issue number when it's handy?
I had to stop collecting comics in the late 80's/early 90's due to having to pay my parent's mortgage at the time. (Dad was out of work.) That set me back several years and I'm just now starting to collect things again. My wife works for Follett Library Services, they sell books to libraries and schools, so I'm lucky enough to get a good dose of independent comics when they have their huge annual book sale for $.25/each. I pick up an amazing amount of Dark Horse stuff and manga there usually.
Man I'm so way behind in everything...

Date: 2006-07-28 03:03 pm (UTC)This weekend, meanwhile... I will be making a Spongebob cake for my friend's 8-year-old's birthday. Maybe a Super Spongebob since he's a Superman fan too. Get'em started early, that's what I say! He's at that very cute age that we will miss the most when puberty hits and he gets grumpy.
