Don't tell me how wonderful and virtuous God is. Not today. Not when, once again, God makes Pat Robertson open his big fat yap:
And you know, Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon the third, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you will get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it's a deal.

And they kicked the French out. You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other. Desperately poor. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It is cut down the middle on the one side is Haiti the other is the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have and we meed to pray for them a great turning to god and out of this tragedy I'm optimistic something good may come. But right now we are helping the suffering people and the suffering is unimaginable.
This greedy, squinty fucktard has, does, and will continue to blame anything on various and sundry people turning away from what he tells them is the True Faith. Notice that I didn't say "what he believes", 'cause I don't even think he believes it himself.

You want evil? Saying that an entire nation's troubles are based on a two-hundred-year-old fairy story, and further saying that they'd better come to your way of thinking before even worse happens... using a goddamn 7.0 earthquake as a warning poster to boost your church's recruitment... that is fuckin' evil.

ETA: Even Fox News is offended. Well, at least Shepard Smith, who is way, way better than a lot of people there.

Not only that, but he is so ignorant he doesn't even know which Napoleon was in charge when the whole thing happened. Also, you should see PZ Myers' comment (http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2010/01/haiti_needs_help.php#comment-2201762) on just exactly how much of a stupid ignorant ass Robertson is:

Speaking of how ignorant Robertson is...while scanning through his recent broadcasts for that video, I discovered that he regularly has a segment where he dispenses medical advice.

Seriously.

I'm creeped out even more now.

Anyway, on one of them, someone asks him about this strange ringing in his ear (a condition called tinnitus). Robertson confidently informed his co-host that this was a problem called Tinactin. I'd demand that his medical license be revoked, except he doesn't have one.

To add to the "evil" quotient, that bit about the pact with the devil is a long-running Protocols of the Elders of Zion-like piece of white supremacist propaganda. Notwithstanding that he practices bibliolatry to an extent he likely thinks slavery is A-OK, probably ole Pat doesn't want all those African workers in the diamond mines he owns to get any ideas...

No matter which way you slice it, he's scum and anything that comes out of his mouth is loathsome.

I'm reposting my comment on this here, when I've noted it elsewhere....

Robertson's god is an vindictive, capricious, indiscriminate one. According to Robertson, he blasted the midwest with tornadoes when California first allowed gays to marry. He brought Katrina to the Gulf and southeastern states all for the French Quarter. He brings earthquakes to Haiti (AND THE DOMINCAN REPUBLIC!!!) for something that happened/may have happened in Haiti 200 years ago.

He's off geographically, off in intensity, and off temporally.

If I have to have a vindictive capricious indiscriminate god, can I choose Dionysius or Pan? At least THEN I know I'll have some Fun.

There really is only one God, but mankind has divided it into many.

& when one really isn't connected to reality anyway, then why not invent a god that does one's bidding. I suspect that the god which Mr. Robertson believes in would not recognize the real God, & would most certainly not survive such a meeting.

Some people God tests with wealth, some with poverty & some with douche-bag naivete.

Of course what this really is, is some thinly veiled racism. He's saying that the only way the slaves of Haiti could have possibly kicked out their French masters is with a pact with the Devil. Implying that such a deed, one which was unique in the world and should be celebrated to some degree, was an act of evil. I read this and think that at some level, Robertson still wants the people of Haiti to be French slaves.

Bastard.

Amen.

It's people like Robertson, Faulwell, et al that make me sometimes wish that hell existed -- just for those evil "men of God." Generally, I have no respect for any supposed "loving" supreme being that has created a hell of eternal torture -- that's not a being worthy of worship; that's a psycopath.

But in the case of these "men of God," I could almost wish for such a destination.

Hopefully, the time will come soon for Robertson to join some of his dearly departed pals there.

I was taught - by a Methodist minister - that "man's relationship with his God, be it Heaven or Hell, is both present, and yet to be."

Pat Robertson *has* to be one miserable son of a bitch if that's true.

(That one phrase above is one of the few things I carried over when my spiritual journey took that hard left at Albuquerque... I still believe that, even more so today.)

The only thing "God" has to do with the (ir-)Religious (not-)Right is to administer a karmic bitch-slap straight back to Mars.

Personally? I'm looking forward to it. I don't want to *watch*....

There are people who Get It when it comes to the words of the Rabbi, "Love your neighbor as yourself." One of them will be helping run sound for you in two weeks. That said, she's also been known to help run sound for bands like Gaia Consort, various incarnations of Skinny White Chick/Tricky Pixie, etc... whose music would *give* Pat said karmic clue-bat, most likely in the form of an apoplectic fit and/or coronary.

But, no, I think Pat's continued existence on this plane is proof positive that a vengeful, jealous deity does *not* exist, or at least not like he would have us think it does... the excuse for a human would've been a smoking hole (or swallowed by one) many moons ago. Christian? He knows not the meaning of the word.

A quote from Frederick Douglass that someone else on my flist posted today, and it is frequently how I as a Christian feel about those...other people, who I would like to not let use the term.

"Between the Christianity of this land, and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest, possible difference–so wide, that to receive the one as good, pure, and holy, is of necessity to reject the other as bad, corrupt, and wicked. To be the friend of the one, is of necessity to be the enemy of the other. I love the pure, peaceable, and impartial Christianity of Christ: I therefore hate the corrupt, slaveholding, women-whipping, cradle-plundering, partial and hypocritical Christianity of this land. Indeed, I can see no reason, but the most deceitful one, for calling the religion of this land Christianity. I look upon it as the climax of all misnomers, the boldest of all frauds, and the grossest of all libels."

When Port Royal in Jamaica was destroyed in an earthquake, everyone said it was divine punishment for piracy. Even though piracy was pretty much gone from Royal for decades and at the time the sugar plantations were served with slave labor. Brutal slave labor where anyone who tried to escape was tied down to the ground and set on fire from the feet.

I bring this up because preachers all over christendom celebrated the destruction of Royal as god's punishment. Today only only a fraction of that number has. This is progress.

Pat, you fail history forever!!! Vodun, which I think is what he is referring to, is not devil worship...it's a syncretic blending of African religions with a sort of garbled folk-version of Catholicism.

ISTR this dingaling went to college at one point...but I'd bet dollars-to-donuts that it was a "Byee-bull" college, where they teach that the world was once covered in a giant flood, Moses parted the Red Sea after Ghawd afflicted the Egyptians (after repeatedly hardening Pharaoh's heart) to show how much bigger he was than they were, and that Abraham was about to cut his own son's throat on Ghawd's orders, when the word came down from On High: "Ha ha, fooled you! I was only kidding...sucker!!!"

If I had a kid, I'd sooner see him in a coffin than attending one of those institutions of mislearning.

Not completely on topic, but fairly close.

A minute or so before seeing this, I read the following forwarded joke -- "The Pope and Rush Limbaugh are on stage in front of a huge crowd. The Pope says, "Do you know that with one wave of my hand I can make every person in this crowd go wild with joy? This joy will go deep into their hearts and they'll forever speak of this day and rejoice!" Limbaugh replied, "I seriously doubt that. A wave of your hand? Show me." So the Pope slapped him."
