A lot of today was a write-off. I wasn't feeling too great, kinda lethargic. I'll have to finish the new iTom song in the morning.

But.

I'm trying to catch up with Doctor Who. And I just watched "Dalek".

Ho.

Lee.

Fuck.

I kinda saw that coming, because I had the vibe once I saw the stairwell that they had to play with it. But I didn't actually think it was going to hover; I imagined something mechanical. Lovely, scary.

You mean you never saw "Remembrance of the Daleks"? (S. McCoy episode) The Daleks have been able to do that at least since that episode. But you're right, it was a very chilling episode, but more for the Doctor's almost-psychotic behavior towards the last survivor of his oldest nemeses.

Indeed. The Doctor acting almost as ruthless as a Dalek was the best thing I like about that episode.

Oh and for the record I've also seen "Rememberance of the Daleks" and knew about the levitation thing.

My problem with that particular episode is the lack of thought by the security goons. Especially the one in the stairwell.

You've just heard it destroy the rest of your pals who had bigger guns than you. But you still think shooting at it in the stairwell is going to slow it down. Better run and barricade IMO.

Of course if I were running an underground base that was full of alien research and tech I'd make sure the goons had at least one or two grenades. But that's just me.

A bloody ground effects Dalek.

Not to mention the 360 degree traverse weapon. Oh, and the force field.

The whole thing reminded me, kinda, of an Evil Bolo.

I saw that just a few days ago. A bit too ham fisted with what they were trying to say. But damn good. It was that episode that made me glad to stick through the series.

And now with the four episodes beyond it under my belt, I'm really extremely glad.

One of the best SF episodes evar, any series. But clearly in the top percentile of Who episodes.

Bear in mind that they'd already /done/ the 'Dalek-up-the-stairs' bit back during 'Remembrance of the Daleks' with Sylvester McCoy. It was a nice nod to the old-school fans, even tho everyone in the 05 'behind the scenes' thing kept saying this was the first time anyone'd done it. They'd forgot, but still.

GREAT episode. And that's not the best one he's done as the Doctor. Keep watching, Tom. :) See you at Dragon*Con next week!

Second most incredible episode of the season. Wait until you hit Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, which is the best episode of Doctor Who ever made.

EC/TDD is way up there, but Dalek just edges them out, I think. This is the single strongest season of Dr Who since Roger Delgado first graced the screen.

They have *got* to get a new Master. I vote Jonathan Pryce, who did it in "Curse of the Fatal Death" and has the look and sound and style down pat (Dalek bumps notwithstanding). While we're on the subject, Rowan Atkinson did make a hell of a Doctor...

He did indeed. As did Richard E Grant. And Jim Broadbent could have done a great job if he'd had a serious character to work with. And as for Doctor Joanna...*sigh*...

Look, it's AU canon, okay? :)

I seem to recall hearing that Broadbent had been considered for really playing The Doctor once upon a time--I believe he was under consideration to be the Sixth or Seventh.

The dialogue between the Doctor and the Dalek was incredible. I had kept myself blissfully unspoiled, except for the obvious episode title, and I had no idea where they were going. When they had the shot of the eyestalk, and the shadowed casing, and the blaster muzzle, I honestly shouted out loud, "OH, SHIT, THEY'VE GOT A DALEK LOCKED UP IN THE BASEMENT!"

Yup. It was that moment that affected me the most of all the DW episodes so far. They spent the prior episodes merely HINTING at the darkness in the Doctor's soul, and when he just completely LOSES IT at the Dalek, it was like... Well, what you said.

I've only got two episodes left in the 2006 (David Tennant) season that I haven't watched yet, but for my money, that moment with the Dalek is the standout.

I also happen to love the little speech he gives Rose in the first episode: "We're just clinging to the skin of this tiny little world, and if we let go..."

You and a whole lot of other people. Dahyum, that was a hell of a moment, when you first see that bugger. It's quite the pity that my couch is shoved up against the wall, or I'd've been behind it right then!

I love "Empty Child/Doctor Dances", 'tis true, and yeah, keep watching not only the rest of Eccleston but also Tennant, but...

"Dalek" is my favourite episode of Eccleston's. It blew me away, in part because you really had no idea where the episode was going until it got there.

Keep watching, because the rest of the season is just as awesome. And so is Tennant. (He starts 9/29 on SciFi.)

Tennant is a wonderful Doctor, but I'm a bit disappointed in his scripts - he doesn't wrestle with a lot of the grey-area moral dilemmas that Eccleston's Doctor faced.

Isn't that a great episode? It's the point at which you realize that maybe what you have here is a little more than you expected....

The Doctor was ready to let Rose die.

Then changed his mind.

When did I last see that happen in a TV show?

Yeah, it's quite something.

Yep, pretty much my reaction. Whenever you can FEEL for a Dalek? Awesome job, folks.

Ironically I just came off of watching "Tomb of the Cybermen" - my wife and I are flashing back to old who, and it's a reminder of how the series could rock even with a low budget.

I really really liked Christopher Eccelston(sp) as the Doctor. A good actor, with a nice sense of when to be funny. :)
